McIvor<br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Male jackdaws don&#8217;t stick around to console their mate after a traumatic experience, new research shows.<\/p>\n<section class=\"article-banner first-banner ads-336x280\"><!-- \/4988204\/Phys_Story_InText_Box --><br \/>\n      <\/section>\n<p>Jackdaws usually mate for life and, when breeding, females stay at the nest with eggs while males gather food.<\/p>\n<p>Rival males sometimes visit the nest and attack the lone female, attempting to mate by force.<\/p>\n<p>In the new study, University of Exeter researchers expected males to console their partner after these incidents by staying close and engaging in <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> behaviors like preening their partner&#8217;s feathers.<\/p>\n<p>However, males focused on their own safety\u2014they still brought food to the nest, but they visited less often and spent less time with the female.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Humans often console friends or family in distress, but it&#8217;s unclear whether animals do this in the wild,&#8221; said Beki Hooper, of the Centre for Ecology and Conservation on Exeter&#8217;s Penryn Campus in Cornwall.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Previous studies have found consolation-like behavior in some animals, but there is often another explanation\u2014other than consolation\u2014that could motivate this.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We designed this study to rule out other explanations, so we could find out whether jackdaws, which have complex social lives and life-long partnerships, would console each other.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We found that male jackdaws could detect their partner&#8217;s distress, but did not console them.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The decreased time males spent in the nest after an attack may be for self-preservation, where they respond to distress in their partner by avoiding the nest, a potential place of danger.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"mb-4\" itemscope=\"\" itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/VideoObject\"><meta itemprop=\"name\" content=\"Jackdaws don't console traumatized mates\"\/><meta itemprop=\"url\" content=\"https:\/\/scx2.b-cdn.net\/gfx\/video\/2021\/jackdaws-dont-console.mp4\"\/><meta itemprop=\"description\" content=\"Nest-box footage of a jackdaw pair allopreening (one bird preening another).
