Stuart Damon, best known for his role as Dr. Alan Quartermaine in the longtime soap opera \u201cGeneral Hospital,\u201d has died at age 84.<\/p>\n

Damon\u2019s son, Christopher, broke the news<\/a> to Los Angeles station ABC7<\/a>, saying that his father\u2019s \u201cfavorite place to be\u201d was the soap opera. \u201cHe loved playing Alan and was always so app<\/a>reciative of that role and that job. It was his passion.\u201d<\/p>\n

Damon had suffered<\/a> from renal failure for several years.<\/p>\n

Born in Brooklyn in 1937, Damon began his acting career on and off-Broadway with appearances throughout the 1960s, including in \u201cThe Boys From Syracuse,\u201d \u201cIrma La Douce\u201d and \u201cDo I Hear a Waltz?\u201d Damon really hit the spotlight once he was cast as the prince in the 1965 TV production of the musical \u201cCinderella,\u201d which also starred Ginger Rogers, Walter Pidgeon, Celeste Holm and then-newcomer Lesley Ann Warren in the title role.<\/p>\n

In 1968, after moving to the United Kingdom, Damon starred in\u00a0the BBC TV adaptation of Mark Twain\u2019s \u201cThe \u00a31,000,000 Bank Note.\u201d He continued to work in British television, starring in \u201cThriller,\u201d \u201cThe New Avengers,\u201d \u201cSpace: 1999\u201d and \u201cThe Adventures of Black Beauty,\u201d among other shows and TV films.<\/p>\n

In 1977, Damon landed his well-known role as Dr. Alan Quartermaine \u2014 a physician with a painkiller addiction \u2014 on \u201cGeneral Hospital.\u201d Twenty-two years and nine Daytime Emmy Award nominations later, Damon won a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series<\/a> in 1999. He also brought the character to the spinoff series \u201cPort Charles.\u201d <\/p>\n

Damon\u2019s Quartermaine remained a prominent figure on \u201cGeneral Hospital\u201d for nearly 30 years. Despite Damon\u2019s character\u2019s death in 2007, Quartermaine retained a ghostly presence on the show until December of 2008. Damon would later return between 2011 and 2013 to sporadically reprise the Quartermaine role.<\/p>\n

After three decades on \u201cGeneral Hospital,\u201d Damon went on to guest star in additional soap operas, including \u201cDays of Our Lives\u201d and \u201cAs the World Turns.\u201d Damon also appeared in the Bob Fosse film \u201cStar 80,\u201d and landed guest roles on American TV series such as \u201cFantasy Island,\u201d \u201cHotel,\u201d \u201cThe New Mike Hammer\u201d and \u201cDiagnosis Murder\u201d in the 1980s and 1990s.<\/p>\n
