The documentary focuses on the Harlem Cultural Festival in 1969 and in anticipation of its theatrical release and streaming\u00a0<strong>Hulu<\/strong>\u00a0release this Friday,\u00a0<strong>Searchlight Pictures<\/strong> has unveiled a new featurette exploring both the festival and the broader cultural forces at work in America, then and now.<\/p>\n<p>In the past couple of years, we\u2019ve seen Oscar contenders like <em>The Trial of the Chicago 7<\/em> and <em>Once Upon a Time in Hollywood<\/em> returning to 1969: a pivotal year in U.S. history when the country underwent great political upheaval and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> change. Among other things, it was the year of the Apollo 11 moon landing and Richard Nixon\u2019s presidential inauguration. The summer brought Woodstock, but it\u2019s another overlooked music event, the Harlem Cultural Festival,\u00a0that serves as the documentary subject of\u00a0<em>Summer of Soul<\/em>.<br \/>\n<!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post -->You may know Questlove as the co-frontman and drummer of the Roots, who burst into the mainstream around the turn of the millennium with music videos like\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/ojC0mg2hJCc\">\u201cThe Seed 2.0.\u201d<\/a> They now serve as Jimmy Fallon\u2019s in-house band on <em>The Tonight Show. King<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Stevie Wonder<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Gladys Knight and the Pips<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>The 5th Dimension.\u00a0<\/strong>The event was stacked with Black musical talent and cameras were there to capture their performances. Yet\u00a0unlike Woodstock \u2014 which had its own widely seen documentary and has lived large in the public imagination \u2014 its footage sat in a basement and never received distribution.<\/p>\n<p>To paraphrase the poet Gil-Heron Scott (and the film\u2019s own subtitle): the revolution was not televised.\u00a0<em>Summer of Soul<\/em> exhumes the footage and sprinkles in interviews that help trace a line from the \u201ctransformative period\u201d of\u00a01969 to over 50 years later when the\u00a0George Floyd protests swept the nation in the summer of 2020.
