Apple didn\u2019t respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Apple\u2019s Roku play is \u201cshocking\u201d development, and a signal that the iPhone maker has finally realized it \u201ccan\u2019t just be within the walled garden of Apple,\u201d said LightShed Partners analyst Rich Greenfield.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody ever would have expected this,\u201d Greenfield told The Post. \u201cThe thought that Apple, rather than create a device that\u2019s going to replace Roku is now buying a button next to Netflix or next to Disney+ just shows you that as they get into the content business, they need to be everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\">\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_18680747\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18680747\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-18680747\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/unnamed-2.png?w=1024\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/unnamed-2.png 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/unnamed-2.png?w=512 512w\" alt=\"An image of the new Roku remote with the AppleTV+ button. \" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18680747\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Roku\u2019s new remotes include a shortcut button for the Apple TV+ app along with buttons for Netflix, Disney+ and Hulu. &#8211; Roku<\/figcaption><\/figure><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Indeed, it is believed that this is the first time Apple has put its branding on a competitor\u2019s hardware. Sources close to the situation said the Cupertino, Calif.-based tech giant is pointedly keeping a low profile about the Roku partnership, which was first revealed in April in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/4\/13\/22381067\/apple-tv-plus-roku-remote-button-announced\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report by the Verge<\/a>\u00a0which attracted little notice.<\/p>\n<p>Apple may be keeping silent, insiders say, because the move stinks of desperation.<\/p>\n<p>Apple doesn\u2019t break out subscriber numbers for Apple TV+, but analytics firm Ampere Analysis estimated that Apple\u2019s streaming service may have surpassed 40 million subscribers by the end of 2020. When the $49.99-a-year service launched, anyone who bought an Apple gadget got a year of Apple TV+ for free. During the pandemic, the offer was extended twice. But next month, the bulk of its initial subscribers are slated to finally get billed.<\/p>\n<p>When users hit the Apple TV+ button, they\u2019re routed directly to the streaming app and prompted to set up an account, which costs $4.99 a month. It wasn\u2019t immediately clear whether Roku would offer a special Apple TV+ promotion for its users, but the service continues to offer free, three-month trials to new customers.<\/p>\n<p>Apple TV+ now has nearly 90 original TV shows, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">movies<\/a> and documentaries, such as \u201cTed Lasso,\u201d starring Jason Sudeikis and \u201cThe Morning Show\u201d with Jennifer Anniston. Nearly 30 percent said they don\u2019t plan to resubscribe once the promo expires, while another 30 percent said they plan to renew at the $4.99 monthly price. The rest said they were unsure what they would do.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs always, we wonder what Apple TV+ does to stand out in an increasingly crowded field,\u201d wrote MoffettNathanson analyst Michael Nathanson. \u201cWe see AppleTV+ as still sputtering versus peers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Greenfield, part of the problem is that there\u2019s \u201cconfusion in the marketplace\u201d about what AppleTV+ is. Roku is rumored to charge a hefty fee for the real estate on its remote controls.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-12-11\/streaming-box-king-roku-is-under-seige-from-amazon-and-apple\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bloomberg reported<\/a>\u00a0in 2019 that a streaming service who buys a button pays Roku $1 per customer for the button.<\/p>\n<p>Roku declined to comment.
