Iconoclast: Racism\u2019s No Cure for Racism<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lori Lightfoot\u2019s decision to talk only to \u201cPOC reporters\u201d on her anniversary as Chicago\u2019s mayor, Stanford\u2019s \u201c\u200a\u2018whiteness-accountability\u2019 affinity groups\u201d and President Biden\u2019s debt relief for minority farmers are all \u201cvariations\u201d on the debate \u201cbetween newfangled equity and old-fashioned equality,\u201d argues The New York Times\u2019 Bret Stephens<\/a> \u2014 i.e., between those pushing \u201cantiracist discrimination\u201d and those who, \u201cto paraphrase Chief Justice John Roberts, think we can stop discrimination on the basis of race without discriminating on the basis of race.\u201d The radicals will lose because equity advocates \u201coffend ordinary sensibilities\u201d: The idea of a \u201cwhiteness-accountability\u201d group \u201cis insulting to everyone who still \u00adbelieves we should be judged by the content of our character.\u201d And \u201ctrying to solve the old racism with the new racism will produce only more racism.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the right: Biden\u2019s Georgia Vendetta<\/strong><\/p>\n

The \u201cBiden Department of Justice\u2019s complaint against Georgia would be laughable if it weren\u2019t so frightening,\u201d declares The Federalist\u2019s Margot Cleveland<\/a>. The DOJ \u201cpoint-blank accuses the Georgia legislature of racism,\u201d as it complains \u201cGeorgia\u2019s new law tightens the use of drop boxes\u201d \u2014 but the legislature \u201chad never app<\/a>roved the use of drop boxes\u201d; bureaucrats at the State Election Board had. And the DOJ says \u201cGeorgia\u2019s \u00adrequirement that voters cast ballots in the proper precinct violates Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act,\u201d though \u201cjust a few months ago, the Biden administration agreed that Arizona\u2019s out-of-precinct voting law was valid.\u201d That\u2019s just \u201ca taste of the surreal state\u201d of the DOJ under Team Biden.<\/p>\n

Libertarian: The Election Fix We Actually Need<\/strong><\/p>\n

Rather than \u201cthe ill-starred and misnamed For the People Act,\u201d which is \u201ca jumble of assorted progressive ideas mostly unrelated\u201d to problems with last year\u2019s elections, Walter Olson asserts at Cato.org<\/a>, Congress must realize that \u201cthe sharpest threats to democratic process in America at the moment relate not to the casting but to the counting of votes.\u201d That means fixing the Electoral Count Act of 1887, which \u201claid out rules meant to govern how Congress should address disputes over the legitimacy of electoral slates submitted by the states.\u201d The act \u201cleaves too wide an opening for those who would argue that Congress, the vice president or both have leeway to exercise a selective power\u201d to count electoral votes. Fix it, so we can \u201cget on with defending democracy the right way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Liberal: Learn From Joe Manchin<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) \u201chas become a target of progressives who insist that he toe the line. But is there really a wide tactical difference between them? Rep. \u00adAlexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a progressive warrior representing a progressive district; Joe Manchin is a militant moderate representing a conservative state,\u201d notes ex-Rep. Steve Israel (D-NY) at The Hill<\/a>. \u201cProgressives have a paradox. If they want to reduce Joe Manchin\u2019s power .\u2009.\u2009. they need to add Democrats and close in on a filibuster-proof majority. But the 2022 Senate electoral landscape will be fought in moderate swing states .\u2009.\u2009. where you win in the center.\u201d Will \u201cDemocrats fight for the perfect bill while Republicans fight to win the next election?\u201d<\/p>\n

Conservative: Dems Gaslight on Police Funding<\/strong><\/p>\n

The new Biden administration and Democratic talking point is that \u201cRepublicans are really the anti-cop party,\u201d sighs National Review\u2019s David Harsanyi<\/a>. \u201cWhy? Because they voted against President Biden\u2019s $1.9 trillion boondoggle \u2018rescue\u2019 package, which included $350 billion for state and local governments that could be spent on police.\u201d This is gaslighting: It\u2019s Dems who for a year have rallied around #Defund: \u201cKamala Harris, Rashida Tlaib, Ayanna Pressley, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Vanita Gupta, Marty Walsh and, yes, Joe Biden \u2014 who, when asked, \u2018Do we agree that we can redirect some of the funding?\u2019 answered, \u2018Yes, absolutely\u2019 \u2014 all backed defund-police efforts to some extent.\u201d Yes, Biden subsequently backtracked, but it\u2019s undeniable that \u201cBlack Lives Matter protests not only spurred the broad-brush vilification of cops, but the widespread progressive embrace\u201d of #Defund. <\/p>\n
