Consumer Reports has restored its \u201cTop Pick\u201d rating on the Tesla Model 3 after new tests showed the car\u2019s new camera-based safety systems are effective.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The consumer advocacy group had revoked the Model 3\u2019s coveted recommendation in May after Tesla dropped radar systems from its lower-priced cars in favor of cameras and artificial intelligence.\u00a0<\/p>\n

At the time, Consumer Reports warned that the Model 3\u2019s forward collision warning<\/a> and automatic emergency braking functions were not proven to be effective without radar sensors. \u00a0<\/p>\n

But on Tuesday, the group reinstated Tesla\u2019s \u201cTop Pick\u201d crown after the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety \u2014 or IIHS \u2014 released a new evaluation showing the Model 3\u2019s driver assist functions still function well without radar.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cGiven the IIHS\u2019 recent evaluations of Tesla\u2019s new camera-based system on its Model 3 and consistent with Consumer Reports\u2019 integration of IIHS ratings into our recommendations, Consumer Reports is restoring the car\u2019s Top Pick status,\u201d said<\/a> Jake Fisher, senior director of the nonprofit organization\u2019s auto test center.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tesla did not immedia<\/a>tely respond to a request for comment.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Consumer Reports\u2019 reversal is a publicity boon for Tesla, which has been facing scrutiny over its assisted driving features. <\/p>\n

The Elon Musk-owned company was forced to recall 285,000 cars in China this week following reports that an alleged cruise control flaw could cause vehicles to suddenly accelerate.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tesla is also facing an inquiry from California\u2019s Department of Motor Vehicles over whether advertising its vehicles as \u201cself-driving\u201d is misleading to consumers since it requires drivers to remain alert and awake at the wheel.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tesla shares were recently up 0.3 percent at $681.01 in early Wednesday trades.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
