Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos on Thursday announced that the fourth passenger on his space tourism company Blue Origin\u2019s first crewed flight will be Wally Funk, a participant of the Mercury 13 program, which sought to recruit women astronauts in the 1960s.<\/p>\n

Funk, 82, will become the oldest person to fly to space once Blue Origin\u2019s New Shepard rocket launches on July 20, the company said.<\/p>\n

Funk was also the first female Federal Aviation Administration inspector and first female National Transportation Safety Board air safety investigator, Blue Origin said.<\/p>\n

She will join Bezos and his brother Mark, along with the unidentified person who paid $28 million at auction to secure a seat on the six-seat craft\u2019s inaugural human flight. <\/p>\n

Bezos announced the news<\/a> on Instagram, along with a video of him and Funk. <\/p>\n

\u201cIn 1961, Wally Funk was at the top of her class as part of the \u2018Mercury 13\u2019 Woman in Space Program. Despite completing their training, the program was cancelled, and none of the thirteen flew,\u201d Bezos explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s time,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

In the video posted on Instagram, Bezos asked Funk what she would say after touching back down on earth.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will say, \u2018Honey, that\u2019s the best thing that\u2019s ever happ<\/a>ened to me\u2019 and give you a hug!\u201d Funk responds.<\/p>\n

She adds that she\u2019s \u201cbeen flying forever\u201d and has racked up 19,600 flying hours. <\/p>\n

\u201cEverything that the FAA has, I\u2019ve got the license for,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd I can outrun you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Funk also recalled her time in the Mercury 13 program, which was privately funded and separate from NASA\u2019s efforts to recruit the first US astronauts.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey told me that I had done better and completed the work faster than any of the guys,\u201d she said. \u201cSo I got a hold of NASA four times. I said, \u2018I want to become an astronaut,\u2019 but nobody would take me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t think that I would ever get to go up,\u201d she added. \u201cThey said, \u2018Wally, you\u2019re a girl! You can\u2019t do that!\u2019 I said, \u2018guess what? Doesn\u2019t matter what you are. You can still do it if you want to do it. And I like to do things that nobody has ever done.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Bezos announced last month that he would be on the July 20 flight, making him the first of the billionaire space tycoons to actually fly to space.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
