Surely, she would have celebrated her birthday with her family, especially her two sons, their wives and five young grandchildren. For many years, the Diana anniversary most noted was that of her death on Aug. 31, 1997, in that tunnel in Paris. For decades, judges, experts and charlatans alike have dissected every moment leading up to that car crash, and every sorrowful event afterward.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, her adored sons, William and Harry, are reclaiming their memories of their mother and presenting them to the world in the form of a statue at her last home of Kensington Palace. \u201cOur mother touched so many lives,\u201d they said when announcing the project in January 2017. \u201cWe hope the statue will help all those who visit Kensington Palace to reflect on her life and her legacy.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The bronze figure of Diana is surrounded by three children \u201cwho represent the universality and generational impact of the princess\u2019s work,\u201d the official press release states. She\u2019s dressed in a simple blouse and belted skirt, which is based on the final years of her life \u201cas she gained confidence in her role as an ambassador for humanitarian causes\u201dand \u201caims to convey her character and compassion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In front of the statue is a stone engraved with an extract of the poem, <i>The Measure of A Man<\/i>:<\/p>\n<p><i>These are the units to measure the worth<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Of this woman as a woman regardless of birth.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Not what was her station?<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>But had she a heart?<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>How did she play her God-given part?<\/i><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0Princess Diana\u2019s legacy is more urgent than ever<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her statue takes pride of place in one of Diana\u2019s favourite spots, the historic sunken garden of Kensington Palace. For the unveiling, the planting scheme was redesigned and simplified, using many of her favourite spring and summer pastel blooms, including forget-me-nots, so as to create a calm, peaceful setting. This is the first permanent statue of Diana and a far cry from the three other public memorials to her in London\u2014a meandering <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.royalparks.org.uk\/parks\/hyde-park\/things-to-see-and-do\/memorials,-fountains-and-statues\/diana-memorial-fountain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stream of a fountain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.royalparks.org.uk\/parks\/kensington-gardens\/things-to-see-and-do\/diana-memorial-playground\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">playground <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and\u00a0a memorial\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.royalparks.org.uk\/parks\/hyde-park\/things-to-see-and-do\/sports-and-leisure\/the-diana-princess-of-wales-memorial-walk\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">walk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also a personal project of her sons, who commissioned it in 2017, the 20th anniversary of her death. They want the stone figure to capture their mother the way they remember her. They chose the designer, raised the funds for the project and oversaw every aspect of its installation. The sculptor,<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ianrank-broadley.co.uk\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Ian Rank-Broadley<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is famous for his realistic depictions of the human form, including the current effigy of the Queen on Commonwealth coinage. The committee overseeing the effort included one of Diana\u2019s closest friends Julia Samuel, as well as her sister Lady Sarah McCorquodale.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diana\u2019s sons made it clear that they do not want the statue to\u00a0become a pilgrimage site for the princess\u2019s fervent fans. \u201cAny flowers or tributes left there will be removed and placed at the golden gates, where they have always been permitted,\u201d a <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/royal-family\/2021\/07\/01\/diana-statue-memorial-birthday-kensington-palace-william-harry\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">source told <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Telegraph<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cThere is a strong desire that this does not become a shrine.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, as surely as the anniversary of her death has overshadowed that of her birth on July 1, 1961, this attempt to reset how the world sees Diana is at least temporarily eclipsed by the rancorous conflict between the brothers, who are now barely talking to each other as once-private disagreements about their lives, attitudes and duties are on public display. The fraternal split became a chasm this spring when Prince Harry stated that his family essentially did nothing as he and his wife, Meghan, suffered mentally from the stresses of their royal roles and an onslaught of racism that came from within the royal family as well as from the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>. In addition, he said that his brother and father were \u201ctr<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ed within the system\u201d of the monarchy, and that he was determined he wasn\u2019t going to pass to his children the<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/prince-harry-podcast-royal-family-zoo-\/2021\/05\/14\/b0b157ea-b487-11eb-bc96-fdf55de43bef_story.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cgenetic pain\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0that he and his father, Charles, had suffered.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0Meghan and Harry\u2019s interview: A royals expert on what we did and didn\u2019t learn<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harry\u2019s obvious anger was matched by that of William, who was <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-9387267\/Prince-William-left-reeling-Harry-Meghans-bombshell-interview-friends-say.html\">reportedly left reeling<\/a> by his brother\u2019s public attacks on his family and the throne on which he will one day sit. \u201cWe are very much not a racist family,\u201d <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/av\/uk-56359393\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">William said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in his one public utterance on the issue. Since the pandemic began, the brothers have been together only once, at the funeral of their grandfather, Prince Philip, in April. Though they left the chapel together, reports soon emerged that the brothers avoided any deep discussion of the issues between them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For their mother, they reunited again in public. This time, the rest of the royal family as well as both of their wives were absent: Meghan gave birth to a daughter in June while Kate\u00a0bowed out. Though the pandemic precluded a big event, guests\u00a0at the unveiling included Diana\u2019s three siblings, as well as those who worked on the project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There may not have been a full-bore reconciliation but neither was there any sign of acrimony between the brothers; they were determined to keep the focus on their mother.\u00a0<\/span>The brothers stood side by side, as they have done so many times, as they pulled the covering off the statue. The event, which occurred away from the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> public\u2019s view, was over in less than 30 minutes.
