Instagram has some explaining to do after users called out one of the platform\u2019s filters for being anti-Semitic.<\/p>\n

\u201cOld School,\u201d which is featured in the app<\/a>\u2019s Effect Gallery, gives the impression that the selfie-taker\u2019s skin is covered in tattoos \u2014\u00a0including snakes, a Native American headdress, the words \u201cpray for me\u201d and what appears to be a swastika.<\/p>\n

Sabrina Zohar, 31, a California clothing designer with more than 17,000 followers on Instagram<\/a>, tried out the filter and was left \u201cspeechless\u201d when it made it appear as if she had the Nazi symbol inked on her arm.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis s \u2013 \u2013 t has to end, not just for Jews but for everyone,\u201d she wrote to her followers. \u201cHitler and then nazis is not a joke or passive topic so let\u2019s stop pretending it\u2019s okay.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI understand what the symbol stands for and the multiple meanings,\u201d Zohar, who founded the loungewear brand Softwear<\/a>, told The Post via email. \u201cBut as someone that is Jewish, it\u2019s hard to be reminded of the symbol that is so in your face.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zohar, who reported the filter for featuring a hate symbol, still posted the image, urging followers to also report it.<\/p>\n

Anyone can submit a filter to be added to the Instagram Effect Gallery, and each filter is reviewed to ensure it doesn\u2019t violate guidelines, including support of hate organizations.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for Facebook<\/a>, which owns Instagram, said that the filter \u201cdoes not violate our policies.\u201d The company said they recognize that the imagery \u201ccan be used in cultural context that predates Nazism\u201d and does not plan on removing the filter.<\/p>\n

Anastasia Truita Tkachenko, the Russian creator of the filter<\/a>, told The Post via direct message that the symbol in question is a Slavic symbol and \u201csymbolizes good, the sun and life.\u201d She noted that the symbol tilts its bent arms in a different direction \u2014 counter-clockwise \u2014 than the Nazi swastika.<\/p>\n

Elana, a 29-year-old social media manager<\/a>\u00a0from New York City, who asked that her last name be withheld for privacy reasons, urged her 55,700 Insta followers to report the filter to the Anti-Defamation League<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs the granddaughter of a Holocaust survivor \u2026 I can not begin to tell you how triggering these images are to me,\u201d Elana told The Post via email. \u201cGrowing up, I promised my family members to do everything in my power to ensure that something as horrific as the Holocaust never happens again. And I plan on continuing to keep that promise to them for as long as I have to.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is yet another example of Facebook falling down on moderating even obvious anti-semitism on their platforms and is further evidence of their need to invest more heavily in content moderation as they expand to new forms of content,\u201d said Jonathan A. Greenblatt, CEO\u00a0of the Anti-Defamation League<\/a>. \u201cThis symbol should have been caught in any review that Facebook undertook when approving various user created Instagram reel effects if they were centering the impact these filters could have on vulnerable and marginalized groups.\u201d<\/p>\n

And while the swastika originated as an emblem of peace<\/a> in Buddhism, Jainism and Hinduism as early as 3000 BCE, Zohar said that the \u201cmajority of people know that symbol to represent one thing\u201d: Nazi hate.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn a world where we are so sensitive to so many things, why is this just casually included on a filter?\u201d said Zohar. \u201cWe should all just be more aware of what is harmful to one another.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
