“#Dems pushing police farce that GOP\u2019s behind defunding<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

This week, White House press secretary Jen Psaki unsheathed one of the most transparently ridiculous political talking points in memory, arguing that Republicans were the ones defunding the police because they failed to support the Democrats\u2019 $1.9 trillion boondoggle COVID \u201crescue\u201d package earlier this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n

For starters, voting against a supplementary federal spending package isn\u2019t the same as proactively cutting law enforcement funding or redirecting existing money \u2014 which is what progressives who support \u201cdefund the police\u201d movement advocate.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Indeed, not a single dollar of the American Rescue Plan was ever reserved for law enforcement spending. State and local officials could, if they chose, allocate some of the relief funding towards law enforcement, but they there was no mandate to do so.\u00a0<\/p>\n

If Congress had written a bill that solely focused on increasing law-enforcement manpower \u2014 let\u2019s call it the \u201cFund the Police Act\u201d \u2014 very few, if any, Democrats would have voted for it.\u00a0<\/p>\n

There isn\u2019t a poll in existence that shows even significant support for the Defund the Police movement among conservatives. A national poll by USA Today\/\u00adIpsos from earlier this year found that 34 percent of Democrats supported the effort \u2014 even though many believed it was a straight cut in funding. Sixty-seven percent of Democrats support redistributing portions of police budgets towards social<\/a> programs, compared with only 16 percent of Republicans.\u00a0<\/p>\n

On the other hand, plenty of local and national progressives have openly called for defunding the cops. When Barack Obama observed \u201cdefund the police\u201d tends to hurt Democrats, Rep. \u00adIlhan Omar pushed back, asserting that it was \u201cnot a slogan but a policy demand.\u201d Democrats like Cori Bush, Kamala Harris, Rashida Tlaib, Ayanna Pressley, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and, yes, Joe Biden \u2014 who, when asked, \u201cDo we agree that we can redirect some of the funding?\u201d answered, \u201cYes, absolutely\u201d \u2014 all backed defund police efforts to some extent.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Some, not all, have now walked back that support, but the repercussions are now being felt in areas with spiking crime rates. Black Lives Matter spurred a broad-brush vilification of cops by the Left. And city councils across the nation began embracing the idea of defunding cops, including in Minneapolis, where George Floyd was murdered. Not one of the cities that toyed with this \u201cnew transformative model for cultivating safety\u201d was run by Republicans.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And, as Psaki and other Democrats know well, the GOP opposition to Biden\u2019s plan wasn\u2019t grounded on the police funding. No serious person believes otherwise.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Yet an accommodating media is rushing to do the Democrats\u2019 job for them, picking up the obvious lie. \u201cWho Really Wants to Defund the Police?\u201d asked a columnist at Bloomberg. \u201cThe GOP should be held accountable for deserting law and order,\u201d wrote The Washington Post\u2019s Jennifer Rubin. \u201cHow Dems are turning the \u2018defund the police\u2019 mantra against the GOP,\u201d MSNBC explained.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It\u2019s the kind of thing you\u2019d expect to see from state-run media. But then, that seems to be where we\u2019re at. Up is down. Black is white. And the GOP wants to defund the police.\u00a0\n <\/p><\/div>\n
