This year, however, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the\u00a0day\u00a0would be \u201ca time for reflection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A #CancelCanadaDay\u00a0march was being held in Ottawa, the capital, while vigils and rallies were held across the\u00a0country\u00a0to honor the victims and survivors of\u00a0Canada\u2019s residential school system. The schools forcibly separated indigenous children from their families, in what the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in 2015 called \u201ccultural genocide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds marched through downtown Toronto on Thursday\u00a0in support of the missing indigenous children, wearing orange shirts and holding placards. In 2020, the unemployment rate for indigenous people in Ontario was 12.5%, compared with 9.5% for non-indigenous people.<\/p>\n<p>Some 30% of visible minorities and indigenous peoples feel treated like outsiders in their own\u00a0country, according to an Angus Reid Institute poll on diversity and racism published on June 21.<\/p>\n<p>The discovery of the remains and a deadly attack on a Muslim family in June that killed three generations of members has led to soul-searching in\u00a0Canada\u00a0about the\u00a0country\u2019s oft-touted reputation for tolerance. The suspect is accused of murder and domestic terrorism.<\/p>\n<p>Hate crimes against Muslims rose 9% to 181 in 2019, according to the latest data by StatCan. About 36% of indigenous people and 42% of visible minorities said\u00a0Canada\u00a0is a racist\u00a0country, according to the Angus Reid survey.<\/p>\n<p>A number of Muslim women who wear hijabs have also been attacked in Alberta in recent weeks, while in Quebec a law banning public servants from wearing the hijab is facing legal challenges, and critics have called the measure a form of institutionalized racism.<\/p>\n<p>New Democrat lawmaker Mumilaaq Qaqqaq, who is Inuk, said she felt unsafe in the House of Commons as an indigenous woman, and last month announced she would not run for re-election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think there\u2019s any reason for celebration (on\u00a0Canada\u00a0Day),\u201d Qaqqaq said.\u00a0\n            <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
