OTTAWA, July 1 \u2013 Multiple cities scrapp<\/a>ed\u00a0Canada\u00a0Day\u00a0celebrations on Thursday\u00a0after the discovery of hundreds of remains of children in unmarked graves at former indigenous schools sparked a reckoning with the\u00a0country\u2019s\u00a0colonial\u00a0past.<\/p>\n

Calls to scale back or cancel celebrations snowballed after, beginning in May, almost 1,000 unmarked graves were found at former residential schools in British Columbia and Saskatchewan that were mainly run by the Catholic Church and funded by the government.<\/p>\n

Traditionally the holiday\u00a0is celebrated with backyard barbecues and fireworks much like July 4 in the United States. This year, however, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the\u00a0day\u00a0would be \u201ca time for reflection.\u201d<\/p>\n

A #CancelCanadaDay\u00a0march was being held in Ottawa, the capital, while vigils and rallies were held across the\u00a0country\u00a0to honor the victims and survivors of\u00a0Canada\u2019s residential school system. The schools forcibly separated indigenous children from their families, in what the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in 2015 called \u201ccultural genocide.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hundreds marched through downtown Toronto on Thursday\u00a0in support of the missing indigenous children, wearing orange shirts and holding placards. Indigenous performer Danielle Migwans performed a healing dance during the march.<\/p>\n

Orange has come to symbolize the acknowledgment of the victims of the\u00a0country\u2019s residential school system.<\/p>\n

\u201cCanada\u00a0is having a reckoning with its\u00a0history,\u201d said Akwasi Owusu-Bempah, a University of Toronto sociology professor who studies race, crime and criminal justice.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think we can celebrate this\u00a0country\u00a0for what it is without recognizing this\u00a0country\u00a0for what it isn\u2019t: a utopia and a bastion of equality and freedom and equal opportunity for all members of society,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Canada\u2019s reputation for tolerance was built on its efforts, starting in the 1970s, to create a multicultural society. But data shows inequalities abound both for indigenous communities and among visible minorities.<\/p>\n

In his\u00a0Canada\u00a0Day\u00a0message, Trudeau said the discoveries of the remains of hundreds of children at former residential schools \u201chave rightfully pressed us to reflect on our\u00a0country\u2019s historical failures,\u201d and the injustices that still exist for indigenous peoples and many others in\u00a0Canada.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis\u00a0Canada\u00a0Day, let\u2019s recommit to learning from and listening to each other so we can break down the barriers that divide us, rectify the injustices of our past, and build a more fair and equitable society for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stark disparities<\/strong><\/p>\n

Indigenous people, who make up less than 5% of the population, face higher levels of poverty and violence and shorter life expectancies.<\/p>\n

The unemployment rate for visible minorities, who make up more than 20% of the total population, was 11.4% in May compared with 7.0% for whites, according to Statistics\u00a0Canada. In 2020, the unemployment rate for indigenous people in Ontario was 12.5%, compared with 9.5% for non-indigenous people.<\/p>\n

Some 30% of visible minorities and indigenous peoples feel treated like outsiders in their own\u00a0country, according to an Angus Reid Institute poll on diversity and racism published on June 21.<\/p>\n

The discovery of the remains and a deadly attack on a Muslim family in June that killed three generations of members has led to soul-searching in\u00a0Canada\u00a0about the\u00a0country\u2019s oft-touted reputation for tolerance. The suspect is accused of murder and domestic terrorism.<\/p>\n

Hate crimes against Muslims rose 9% to 181 in 2019, according to the latest data by StatCan. About 36% of indigenous people and 42% of visible minorities said\u00a0Canada\u00a0is a racist\u00a0country, according to the Angus Reid survey.<\/p>\n

A number of Muslim women who wear hijabs have also been attacked in Alberta in recent weeks, while in Quebec a law banning public servants from wearing the hijab is facing legal challenges, and critics have called the measure a form of institutionalized racism.<\/p>\n

New Democrat lawmaker Mumilaaq Qaqqaq, who is Inuk, said she felt unsafe in the House of Commons as an indigenous woman, and last month announced she would not run for re-election.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think there\u2019s any reason for celebration (on\u00a0Canada\u00a0Day),\u201d Qaqqaq said.\u00a0\n <\/p><\/div>\n
