Every hit off Jacob deGrom these days sparks a \u201cHow did he do that?\u201d reaction.<\/p>\n

But to drill a 100 mph fastball off the edge of the outside corner of the plate for an opposite-field home run like the Braves\u2019 Austin Riley did Thursday night against deGrom? That is more than a head-scratcher. It\u2019s a glove-thrower, which is how deGrom reacted when he returned to the dugout after stunningly allowing three runs in the first inning of what became a 4-3 loss in Atlanta.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was really frustrated,\u201d deGrom said, referencing between-innings conversations with catcher James McCann and pitching coach Jeremy Hefner. \u201cI said to James, \u2018How did he hit that?\u2019 I felt like I made my pitch and he was able to get a bat to it and hit it over the fence. I\u2019ve got to tip my cap to him.\u201d<\/p>\n

DeGrom answered those questions by ringing up 14 strikeouts \u2014 eight in a row at one point \u2014 and retiring the final 18 batters he faced. It was dominance delayed \u2014 but not good enough in deGrom\u2019s eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cI said to Hef, \u2018That\u2019s all they get,\u2019 \u201d deGrom said. \u201cI had to turn the page.\u201d<\/p>\n

When Ehire Adrianza turned deGrom\u2019s second pitch into a trip<\/a>le after replay reversed an incorrect \u201cout\u201d call at third base, it snapp<\/a>ed a streak of 37 consecutive batters retired in the first inning by deGrom. That was the longest streak of its kind in 90 years, according to ESPN Stats & Info.<\/p>\n
