{"id":289444,"date":"2021-07-02T14:46:21","date_gmt":"2021-07-02T11:46:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/bitcoin-billionaire-mircea-popescu-dies-leaving-lost-fortune\/"},"modified":"2021-07-02T14:46:21","modified_gmt":"2021-07-02T11:46:21","slug":"bitcoin-billionaire-mircea-popescu-dies-leaving-lost-fortune","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/bitcoin-billionaire-mircea-popescu-dies-leaving-lost-fortune\/","title":{"rendered":"#Bitcoin billionaire Mircea Popescu dies, leaving lost fortune"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Bitcoin billionaire Mircea Popescu dies, leaving lost fortune<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Controversial Bitcoin billionaire Mircea Popescu, 41, has suddenly died, leaving behind a massive crypto fortune that could be worth as much as $2 billion \u2014 which some speculate could be lost forever.<\/p>\n<p>Popescu, known for being among the largest individual holders of Bitcoin in the world at one point, drowned last week off the coast of Costa Rica near Playa Hermosa after going for a morning swim, according to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.teletica.com\/sucesos\/extranjero-de-41-anos-murio-ahogado-en-playa-hermosa-garabito_288345\">local news reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Popescu was reportedly \u201cswept away by the current and died on the spot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His death has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/raw_avocado\/status\/1409089877849804805\">since been confirmed<\/a> by three women who <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/articles\/mircea-popescu-bitcoin-blogger-and-provocateur-reported-dead-at-41-2021-06-28\">were reportedly known<\/a> to be close to him, though others have raised questions over whether he\u2019s actually dead.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/trilema.com\/\">His website<\/a>, which he previously actively maintained, has not been updated since June 23, the day of his reported death.<\/p>\n<p>Popescu, a controversial figure with \u201cdocumented instances of sexism and bigotry,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/articles\/mircea-popescu-bitcoin-blogger-and-provocateur-reported-dead-at-41-2021-06-28\">according to Nasdaq.com<\/a>, was <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bitcointalk.org\/index.php?topic=321265.0\">estimated to hold<\/a> at least tens of thousands of Bitcoins, with some estimating even larger holdings.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"\/>The lower end of those estimates would place the value of Popescu\u2019s ownership close to $2 billion, based on the peak value of Bitcoin reached in April. He likely owned quite a bit of bitcoin,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/devchart\/status\/1409239381257428997?s=20\">Pompliano said<\/a> on June 27 in the since-deleted tweet. \u201cWe may never know how much or if they are lost forever, but reminds me [of what] Satoshi said: \u2018Lost coins only make everyone else\u2019s coins worth slightly more.
