Sha\u2019Carri Richardson is speaking out and making no excuses as she\u2019s suspended from Team USA over a positive drug test.<\/p>\n

The 21-year-old sprinter tested positive for marijuana at the US Olympic trials, and on Friday, she faced the situation head-on in a \u201cToday Show\u201d interview. <\/p>\n

\u201cI know what I did. I know what I\u2019m supposed to do \u2026 I still made that decision,\u201d Richardson told Savannah Guthrie. <\/p>\n

Her lawyer\u00a0confirmed to NBC News<\/a>\u00a0that she has been suspended from the Olympic team after testing positive for THC, the chemical in marijuana.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to take responsibility for my actions. I\u2019m not looking for an excuse,\u201d Richardson said. <\/p>\n

On Friday, the sprinter accepted a one-month suspension as a result of her positive marijuana test. The ban, for \u201ctesting positive for a substance of abuse,\u201d began on June 28, 2021.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe rules are clear, but this is heartbreaking on many levels; hopefully, her acceptance of responsibility and apology will be an important example to us all that we can successfully overcome our regrettable decisions, despite the costly consequences of this one to her,\u201d USADA CEO Travis T. Tygart said. <\/p>\n

The USADA statement did not confirm whether or not Richardson can run in the relay.<\/p>\n

\u201cRight now I\u2019m just putting all of my energy into dealing with what I need to deal with to heal myself,\u201d Richardson said on \u201cToday.\u201d <\/p>\n

It\u2019s unclear if she will app<\/a>eal the drug test results. <\/p>\n

Richardson tested positive in Oregon, where recreational cannabis use and possession are legal. Though, marijuana is considered a banned substance by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and USA Track & Field.<\/p>\n

Richardson rose to popularity after winning the women\u2019s 100m race at the U.S. Olympic track and field trials last month, which slated her as one of Team USA\u2019s top gold medal contenders.<\/p>\n

Her lengthy lashes, colorful hair and long, manicured nails were fan favorites \u2014 aside from her speed and viral victory, when she ran into the stands to hug her grandmother.<\/p>\n

Richardson revealed in the NBC interview that her biological mother had died the week before her race. <\/p>\n

During her interview on \u201cToday,\u201d she revealed that she learned about her mother\u2019s passing from a reporter \u2014 a moment she described as \u201cshocking\u201d and \u201ctriggering.\u201d <\/p>\n

Richardson confirmed she used the substance after being \u201cblinded by emotion blinded by bad news<\/a>, blinded by just hurting, hiding hurt honestly\u2026 I was just trying to hide my pain.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not making an excuse or looking for empathy in my case. However, being in that position in my life, finding out something like that \u2026 Dealing with the relationship I have with my mother, that definitely was a very heavy topic on me,\u201d she explained. <\/p>\n

Richardson went on to express optimism about her Olympic future. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis is just one game<\/a>. I\u2019m 21. I\u2019m very young. Unlike most, I have plenty of games left in me to compete in and I have plenty of talent that backs me up because everything I do comes from me naturally: No steroids. \u2026 After my sanction is up I\u2019ll be back and ready to compete,\u201d she said before apologizing to her fans, family, sponsors, and \u201cthe haters too.\u201d<\/p>\n

After the positive test made headlines on Thursday, Richardson tweeted, \u201cI am human.\u201d<\/p>\n

In wake of her suspension, athletes and celebrities \u2014 including Dwyane Wade<\/a>, Gabrielle Union<\/a>, Emmanuel Acho<\/a> and more \u2014 have spoken out in support of Richardson on social media<\/a>.\n <\/div>\n
