In the column\u2019s first en<\/em>t<em>ry, we discuss the response to the new Don\u2019t Breathe 2 trailer<\/em>.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>In March of this year, <em><strong>Don\u2019t Breathe <\/strong><\/em>director <strong>Fede Alvarez<\/strong> teased that the upcoming sequel, which he co-wrote with director <strong>Rodo Sayagues<\/strong>, would be \u201cjust quite different\u201d from the original. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.syfy.com\/syfywire\/dont-breathe-2-fede-alvarez-exclusive-tease\">Talking to SyFy Wire<\/a>, he explained that it \u201chas everything you love about the first one, hopefully, but done with a completely different <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roach, storytelling-wise.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>With the release of the <strong><em>Don\u2019t Breathe 2<\/em><\/strong> trailer this week, we now know what he means.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"DON\u2019T BREATHE 2 - Official Trailer (HD) | Exclusively In Movie Theaters August 13\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gRbG2tjHYCA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The original <em>Don\u2019t Breathe<\/em>, released in 2016, follows a trio of teenagers \u2014 Rocky (Jane Levy), Alex (Dylan Minnette), and Money (Daniel Zovatto) \u2014 who decide to rob a blind veteran, Norman Nordstrom (<strong>Stephen Lang<\/strong>), thinking it\u2019ll be an easy job. However, he\u2019s not the helpless man they expect, and they discover a pregnant woman tied up in his basement. This unassuming old man kidnaps, tortures, rapes, and murders young women, and the three protagonists have to escape from his grasp.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-is-the-blind-man-a-hero-now\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_%E2%80%9CThe_Blind_Man%E2%80%9D_a_hero_now\"><\/span>Is \u201cThe Blind Man\u201d a hero now?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>But now, as seen in the <em>Don\u2019t Breathe 2<\/em> trailer, \u201cThe Blind Man\u201d is no longer the villain. In fact, Norman is portrayed as the hero as he hunts down three men who kidnap the young orphan girl he has taken under his wing. He must tap into his violent nature to fight back and save his pseudo-daughter.<\/p>\n<p>With Norman revealed as the sequel\u2019s protagonist, many fans tweeted in opposition to making a villain, specifically a rapist, sympathetic and heroic. The new movie is confirmed to take place years after the events of the first, which means we\u2019re in for a redemption arc for a horrific monster of a man whose actions in <em>Don\u2019t Breathe <\/em>are deplorable. And the trailer for <em>Don\u2019t Breathe 2<\/em> makes him seem even more innocent as it only barely references what happened in the previous film.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But according to Alvarez\u2019s response to the backlash, the trailer may have been slightly misleading. He tweeted:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">ANTIVILLAIN: it\u2019s a screenwriting term to describe a Villain, that\u2019s convinced he\u2019s not one. But we agree, he definitely is!<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Fede Alvarez (@fedalvar) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/fedalvar\/status\/1410675882310524928?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 1, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<h2 id=\"h-what-is-an-anti-villain\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_an_anti-villain\"><\/span>What is an anti-villain?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>An \u201c<strong>anti-villain<\/strong>\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/tvtropes.org\/pmwiki\/pmwiki.php\/Main\/AntiVillain\">is a trope<\/a> concerning an antagonist who does have heroic goals. This implies, then, that despite Norman being the bad guy, his motivations in <em>Don\u2019t Breathe 2<\/em> should still be considered heroic regardless of his sins. Other anti-villain examples include Killmonger in <em>Black Panther<\/em> and Magneto in <em>X-Men<\/em>. This means, to Alvarez, Norman still displays some redeemable qualities even in the face of his past. Such a claim is unsettling in this context, again, due to the events of the first movie, particularly <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/QO0gZrQw9KU\">one scene involving a turkey baster<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>During a special Q&amp;A after the June 30th premiere of the <em>Don\u2019t Breathe 2<\/em> trailer, Alvarez and Sayagues were able to go deeper into their choice for Norman\u2019s character arc. First, they explained that \u201cthe true protagonist of this movie is the girl\u201d and that \u201cthe point of view is never [Norman\u2019s]. We always see him from someone else\u2019s perspective.\u201d The trailer seems to contradict that statement, however, as it focuses solely on Norman and his actions to save a young girl.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With the trailer\u2019s focus on Norman and his actions, it\u2019s hard to see how we are only going to view him from the perspectives of other characters, so the claim made by Alvarez and Sayagues is confusing. Yet, with this discrepancy between what the trailer shows and what the filmmakers say about the sequel, perhaps we can expect something a bit more nuanced than is being marketed.<\/p>\n<p><em>Don\u2019t Breathe 2<\/em> sneaks into theaters on August 13, 2021.\u00a0\n<\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
