Charlie Kaufman<\/strong>\u2018s new film\u00a0I\u2019m Thinking of Ending Things<\/em><\/strong>, based on a twisty, creepy novel by Iain Reid, is headed to Netflix in September. The first official look at Kaufman\u2019s film has arrived via some new images, and while they don\u2019t hint at the weirdness to come, Kaufman promises that \u201cloneliness and hopelessness and regret\u201d are all woven into the movie\u2019s fabric. EW has the first look at\u00a0I\u2019m Thinking of Ending Things<\/em>, which features the pic above, and another image where star Jessie Buckley<\/strong> makes a stop at a\u00a0Dairy Queen-like joint in the midst of a snowstorm. Check it out:<\/p>\n

In\u00a0I\u2019m Thinking of Ending Things<\/em>, \u201cOn a road trip<\/a> to meet his parents on their secluded farm, Jake\u2019s girlfriend is thinking of ending things. When Jake makes an unexpected detour, leaving her stranded, a twisted mix of palpable tension, psychological frailty, and sheer terror ensues.\u201d Buckley is the girlfriend, Jesse Plemons<\/strong> is Jake, and\u00a0Toni Collette<\/strong> and David Thewlis<\/strong> are the parents. If you\u2019re wondering why Buckley\u2019s character doesn\u2019t seem to have a name, that\u2019s in keeping with the source material \u2013 a novel by\u00a0Iain Reid. The book is told entirely from the girlfriend\u2019s POV and we never learn her name.<\/p>\n

Having read the book, I can confirm it\u2019s creepy and atmospheric. That said, there are some things in the book that might be tricky to bring to the screen. However, Charlie Kaufman has proven in the past he has a knack for creating unconventional films, so I have faith in this and remain excited to see how it turns out.<\/p>\n

\u201cLoneliness and hopelessness and regret \u2014 these are things that are part of the fabric of this film,\u201d Kaufman tells EW, adding: \u201cI don\u2019t set out to do a mindfuck. I\u2019m not setting out to do something that \u2018tops\u2019 some sort of brainteaser I might have done before. But there\u2019s no question that I\u2019m trying to build on the stuff that I\u2019ve already done.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kaufman also talks a bit about what the couple\u2019s destination \u2013 the parent\u2019s house \u2013 means to the film:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe house represents the imagined interaction between someone you bring home to your parents \u2014 that panic that is twoheaded at that point. You\u2019re worried about what they\u2019re going to think about your parents, and you\u2019re always worried about what your parents are going to think of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
