\n Education beat: Don\u2019s Bid for Suburban Moms<\/strong><\/p>\n

At the Washington Examiner, Bethany Mandel notes how liberal parents who back school reopenings think President Trump\u2019s supportive comments hurt their case, at least among the left \u2014 because the left is so anti-Trump. Yet he might have been playing electoral politics: He knows which voters \u201chold the Holy Grail to his re-election: suburban white women,\u201d who want their kids in school and learning, not \u201csitting in front of a computer screen pretending to learn.\u201d Nor do these moms want to be forced to choose between their kids\u2019 education and their jobs. Meanwhile, Joe Biden has pledged support to the teachers\u2019 unions, which parents see as \u201cin conflict\u201d with their children\u2019s best interests. Biden\u2019s move may prove \u201ca fateful error come November.\u201d<\/p>\n

China watch: The UK\u2019s Huawei Fine Print<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAs with any cell-phone contract, the devil is in the small print,\u201d warns British Member of Parliament Bob Seely at Spectator USA. And so it is with the UK government\u2019s announcement that Chinese telecom giant Huawei must be out of the country\u2019s 5G network by 2027: Vendors can still use Huawei equipment bought this year until 2026, and \u201cthere is no rip-out date for old 3G or 4G.\u201d Yet \u201cif a week is a long time in politics, seven years is a veritable lifetime\u201d \u2014 it\u2019s possible \u201cHuawei will sell as many kits as they can in the next six months\u201d in Britain \u201cand then seek to overturn the ban after the next election.\u201d After all, \u201cHuawei and the Chinese Communist Party are nothing if not tenacious.\u201d And by 2027, \u201cwe will have moved onto 6G anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pandemic journal: The Risk of More Lockdowns<\/strong><\/p>\n

A New York Times op-ed by John Barry, author of \u201cThe Great Influenza,\u201d on the Spanish Flu pandemic, argues for another round of lockdowns \u2014 which National Review\u2019s Jim Geraghty finds \u201cfrustrating\u201d and dangerous. Barry wants fines for people who make \u201cdumb decisions,\u201d inanely paints New York as a \u201ccoronavirus success story\u201d and fails to even mention the exceptions made for anti-racism protests. Nor does he acknowledge that lockdowns have \u201charmful effects\u201d \u2014 prompting \u201cdrug overdoses, suicides, delayed cancer surgeries\u201d and at-risk patients \u201cstaying away from hospitals until it\u2019s too late.\u201d Or that they\u2019ll clobber the economy, even as many Americans are \u201cwondering how they\u2019re \u00adgoing to pay the rent.\u201d His argument\u2019s biggest flaw: failing to weigh \u201chow many people will die without a strict lockdown in place\u201d versus the number who will succumb if it\u2019s restored.<\/p>\n

Iconoclast: We\u2019re Losing the New Cold War<\/strong><\/p>\n

The United States will need \u201cinternal cohesion\u201d and \u201cdiplomatic acumen\u201d to wage a cold war against \u201cthe genocidal tyrants in Beijing\u201d \u2014 yet, The Week\u2019s Matthew Walther sighs, it probably lacks both. Even if Americans were \u201cwilling to alter their consumption\u201d of \u201cChinese plastic junk,\u201d we\u2019d still have elites who serve \u201cBeijing\u2019s interests\u201d by railing against \u201cbeloved syrup and football mascots\u201d while ignoring China\u2019s genocide of Uighur Muslims. By contrast, China\u2019s leaders have exploited the current pandemic, which they caused, and are expanding their \u00adinfluence via \u201cinfrastructure investment\u201d in many of our NATO-ally nations. Beijing\u2019s political aspirations will only bring more messes like the COVID-19 crisis in the years to come. And don\u2019t \u201cexpect more favorable outcomes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Libertarian: A Modern Reign of Terror<\/strong><\/p>\n

Woke mobs branding opponents as racists and costing them their jobs remind Reason\u2019s Robby Soave of the French Revolution\u2019s Committee of Public Safety in 1793 \u2014 with \u201cradical leaders\u201d who believe \u201cpublic safety requires public terror.\u201d Critics of today\u2019s radicals may not fear \u201cbeing sentenced to the guillotine,\u201d but \u201closing employment and social<\/a> standing\u201d is \u201cno small matter.\u201d Political scientist David Shor, for one, lost his job at the Democratic consulting firm Civic Analytics merely because he shared research showing nonviolent protests work better than violent ones. Too many social-media activists didn\u2019t care whether his impulse was liberal or even \u201creflected reality\u201d: They just \u201cdenounced Shor as a racist,\u201d prompting his firing. This modern \u201cterror\u201d is all too similar to what the Jacobin committee instilled. \u201cCall it the 1793 Project.\u201d<\/p>\n
