“#Manhattan’s elected DA Bragg vows to ‘hold police accountable’<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Alvin Bragg, a former federal prosecutor who is now poised to be Manhattan\u2019s next District Attorney, has promised supporters to \u201chold police accountable\u201d but said nothing about fighting crime.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are one step closer to making history and transforming the District Attorney\u2019s office,\u201d Bragg said in a Friday evening statement shortly after his chief opponent Tali Farhadian Weinstein conceded.<\/p>\n

He vowed to bring an end to \u201cracial disparities and mass incarceration\u201d in the criminal justice system, but didn\u2019t address the rash of shootings and other spiking crimes across the city. <\/p>\n

In a statement of her own Friday afternoon Weinstein said she would support Bragg and called to congratulate him.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have now counted a majority of paper ballots, and though we fought a hard race, it has become clear that we cannot overcome the vote margin. When all votes are counted, we expect to come in second by a few percentage points,\u201d she said in an email to supporters.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had important disagreements throughout the campaign, but I am confident in Alvin\u2019s commitment to justice, and I stand ready to support him. I wish him and the women and men who serve in the district attorney\u2019s office every success,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

Bragg still needs to get through a general<\/a> election against Republican rival Thomas Kenniff \u2014 something that is viewed as little more than a formality on the heavily Democratic leaning island.<\/p>\n

If he takes office, Bragg will become the first black District Attorney in the borough\u2019s history. He will also inherit the office\u2019s investigation\u00a0of the Trump Organization \u2014\u00a0a controversial inquiry with potentially national implications.<\/p>\n

Bragg defeated a crowded field of primary challengers. Among the other vanquished opponents included, former \u201cSurvivor\u201d contestant and public defender Eliza Orlins, Assemblyman Dan Quart, civil rights attorney Tahanie Aboushi and former Manhattan assistant district attorney Lucy Lang.<\/p>\n

Unlike many other city primary races, the Manhattan DA race did not use ranked-choice voting, because it is a state election.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
