An afternoon nap can help, but if you use your Apple Watch to track your health, fitness, activity, and sleep, naps can bring problems.<\/p>\n<p>So, let\u2019s look at the shambles that is nap tracking with an Apple Watch.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Officially_No\"><\/span>Officially, No<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-735583\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/IMG_0633.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"An Apple Health sleep schedule\" width=\"650\" height=\"302\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Apple Watch uses a manually set sleep schedule to determine when you\u2019re in bed instead of, say, lying on the couch watching Netflix. Other algorithmic elements\u00a0contribute as well to give your Apple Watch a good idea of your nightly sleep.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-735584 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/IMG_0634.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"sleep mode button on an Apple Watch\" width=\"650\" height=\"421\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Sleep Mode toggle does almost nothing!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When you nap, you can hit the Sleep Mode button in the Control Center on your Apple Watch and iPhone, but no tracking occurs if you use it out of your assigned bedtime hours. It turns on Do Not Disturb mode, but your sleep won\u2019t get tracked no matter how long you nap.<\/p>\n<p>You can\u2019t even set the sleep schedule to cover an entire day: It\u2019s limited to 20 hours. This approach would also severely limit the usefulness of both your iPhone and Watch and throw up loads of false positives.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Third-Party_Apps_Arent_Much_Better\"><\/span>Third-Party Apps Aren\u2019t Much Better<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Third-party sleep-tracking apps, which used to be the only way to track your sleep with an Apple Watch, aren\u2019t much better. We\u2019ve tested each one that we could find, and only one of them\u2014Sleep++, which we\u2019ll look at in a moment\u2014reliably worked.<\/p>\n<p>The big problem is that the more an app tries to detect your sleep habits automatically, the worse it gets at tracking naps. The push of a button is all that\u2019s necessary to record a nap effectively.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Sleep_Workaround\"><\/span>The Sleep++ Workaround<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/sleep\/id1038440371\">Sleep++<\/a>, a free sleep-tracking app, lets you easily track naps. The process still isn\u2019t perfect, but until Apple rolls out full nap support, it works well enough.<\/p>\n<p>The key is that Sleep++ enables you to quickly add a sleep session for any time after the fact and then uses your Apple Watch motion data to work things out. The process goes like this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Step One:<\/strong> Have a nap. Wear your Apple Watch, note what time you go to bed, and enjoy it!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Step Two:<\/strong> When you wake up, note the time again. Have a coffee if you\u2019re so inclined.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Step Three:<\/strong> When you get a chance, open Sleep++ on your iPhone and tap \u201cRecord Night for [Today\u2019s Date].\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-735585 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/record.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Tap the &quot;record night&quot; button\" width=\"650\" height=\"481\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Step Four:<\/strong> Adjust the Bedtime and Wake Up time according to your notes, and then tap \u201cAdd.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-735586 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/IMG_0636.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Add a night in Sleep++\" width=\"650\" height=\"492\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>And just like that, your nap will get logged to the Health app, along with the rest of the automatically tracked data from your Watch.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-735587\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/IMG_0637.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"nap tracked in apple health app\" width=\"650\" height=\"592\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Sleep++ can also try to automatically track your sleep. However, two separate sleep-tracking apps running simultaneously tend to confuse your data.
