One of those requirements is a TPM 2.0 chip. But what exactly is that, and why is Microsoft requiring it?<\/p>\n<p>TPM stands for \u201cTrusted Platform Module\u201d and it\u2019s a type of chip located on your computer\u2019s motherboard for security. While that\u2019s a good jumping-off point, we dove in and explored the little-known component even more to answer all of your burning questions, like what it\u2019s used for, how to see if your computer already has one, and where to buy one if it doesn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Is_a_TPM_Chip\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"moka_anchor_WhatisaTPMChip\">What Is a TPM Chip?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A Trusted Platform Module is a tiny chip on your computer\u2019s motherboard providing security-related functions at a hardware level. It\u2019s essentially a secure crypto-processor capable of carrying out operations like generating encryption keys and providing a mix of software- and hardware-based authentication in a tamper-resistant fashion.<\/p>\n<p>Modern off-the-shelf computers typically already have a standalone TPM chip soldered to the motherboard. If you are building your own PC, you can also purchase one separately as an add-on module for any motherboard that supports it. Some can be integrated into the main CPU as firmware or as a physical add-on. There are also purely virtual TPMs, running completely within software. Though neither are as secure as a standalone chip, the former is still the more viable option of the two as it uses a discrete and trusted environment compared to one that can be easily hacked and altered.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Are_TPM_Chips_Used_for\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"moka_anchor_WhatareTPMChipsUsedFor\">What Are TPM Chips Used for?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In short, TPM chips are all about security. They are most commonly used to protect and encrypt data, and can store sensitive information like passwords, encryption keys, and security certificates with a hardware barrier.<\/p>\n<p>A TPM chip can quarantine itself (and thus, any data stored on there) if it detects malware or a virus on your device. In some cases, the chip can scan your computer\u2019s BIOS upon restart and run a series of conditional tests to check for unwanted programs or access before running it. The chips are also capable of detecting whether someone has tampered with your computer\u2019s drive (say, if it was stolen) and preventing your computer from booting up and locking the system if it does detect something. The chips can also store biometric login information, like that used for Windows Hello.<\/p>\n<p>Most commonly, however, the chips are used to generate unique cryptographic keys. In doing so, the chip keeps a part of the key to itself (literally\u2014it\u2019s only stored in the TPM, never on your hard drive). The chips are also frequently used by browsers\u2014like Chrome\u2014in advanced functions like maintaining SSL certificates.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Who_Uses_TPM_Chips\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"moka_anchor_WhoUsesTPMChips\">Who Uses TPM Chips?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Previously, the component was typically only used by big companies needing to secure their information. You\u2019d mostly see the chips in corporate laptops, as they were used there to ensure neither the hardware or software had been messed with by employees or anyone else.<\/p>\n<p>Media companies using set-top boxes often employed them to ensure their content could be properly distributed without theft. Modern smartphones, like Pixels and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/339705\/what-is-apples-secure-enclave-and-how-does-it-protect-my-iphone-or-mac\/\">iPhones<\/a>, have also <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/387934\/your-smartphone-has-a-special-security-chip.-heres-how-it-works\/\">recently adopted<\/a> similar security chips.<\/p>\n<p>Now, though it has yet to state why, Microsoft is also choosing to make the chip a significant part of its hardware requirements for its upcoming Windows 11 update. It is thrusting a relatively niche component into the spotlight, as anyone wanting to run the new operating system will need to know about it.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_Might_Microsoft_Be_Requiring_a_TPM_Chip_for_Windows_11\"><\/span>Why Might Microsoft Be Requiring a TPM Chip for Windows 11?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>When Microsoft announced <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewgeek.com\/90246\/everything-we-know-about-windows-11-so-far\/\">Windows 11 at its June 24 event, it also listed out specific hardware requirements that computers would need to meet if they were to run the operating system. In its documentation, Microsoft initially listed TPM 1.2 as a \u201chard floor\u201d requirement and TPM 2.0 as a \u201csoft floor,\u201d and said, \u201cDevices that do not meet the hard floor cannot be upgraded to Windows 11, and devices that meet the soft floor will receive a notification that upgrade is not advised.\u201d Yes, that\u2019s very confusing.<\/p>\n<p>Naught but a few days later did Microsoft remove that information from its website. It also stated in an <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.windows.com\/windows-insider\/2021\/06\/28\/update-on-windows-11-minimum-system-requirements\/\">updated blog post<\/a> that it had temporarily removed the PC Health Check app that let users see whether or not their computer was compatible with the new hardware requirements, citing backlash. Currently, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/windows-11-specifications\">Microsoft lists<\/a> TPM 2.0 as the only hard minimum.<\/p>\n<p>To date, Microsoft has never presented such stringent hardware requirements for any previous versions of Windows. In fact, the chips will offer a baseline of hardware security for Windows 11 to run on. Microsoft has also been <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/click.linksynergy.com\/deeplink?id=2QzUaswX1as&amp;mid=24542&amp;u1=rg\/90877&amp;murl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.microsoft.com%2Fsecurity%2Fblog%2F2021%2F03%2F30%2Fnew-security-signals-study-shows-firmware-attacks-on-the-rise-heres-how-microsoft-is-working-to-help-eliminate-this-entire-class-of-threats%2F%3FranMID%3D24542%26amp%3BranEAID%3DnOD%2FrLJHOac%26amp%3BranSiteID%3DnOD_rLJHOac-vovg8mUTH7JU1penBb2OrA%26amp%3Bepi%3DnOD_rLJHOac-vovg8mUTH7JU1penBb2OrA%26amp%3Birgwc%3D1%26amp%3BOCID%3DAID2000142_aff_7593_1243925%26amp%3Btduid%3D%2528ir__hm2kky1hh0kfqjvvkk0sohzgxe2xuccjmog0vw3000%2529%25287593%2529%25281243925%2529%2528nOD_rLJHOac-vovg8mUTH7JU1penBb2OrA%2529%2528%2529%26amp%3Birclickid%3D_hm2kky1hh0kfqjvvkk0sohzgxe2xuccjmog0vw3000\">sharing warnings<\/a> about firmware attacks for months, and with all the ransomware attacks we\u2019ve seen, (not to mention IoT and supply vulnerabilities or phishing attacks) it certainly won\u2019t hurt to make an extra effort to ensure things are more secure for the future.<\/p>\n<p>But while TPM chips will go a long way to mitigate these attacks, which are predominantly launched against devices running Windows, Microsoft needs to consider its users as well.<\/p>\n<p>Some might argue that the heavier hardware requirements are fiscally motivated. The idea is to help propel planned obsolescence and force more people into buying a new computer that has all of the required hardware.\u00a0 That might prevent people from holding onto their old desktop that\u2019s still running Windows 8 for another decade as folks have done in the past with previous updates. Given that Microsoft is a business and not a philanthropic endeavor, that\u2019s a fair argument.<\/p>\n<p>However, Microsoft\u2019s history proves it\u2019s less than stellar when it comes to pushing its software and hardware into the future. The company has actually required TPMs to be enabled on any new PCs since Windows 10, OEMs have been required to ship devices with TPM support but the company has never forced its device partners to enable them for Windows to run. It\u2019s worth keeping in mind that even Windows 10 laptops and desktops just five years old or less might be cut off from Windows 11.<\/p>\n<p>Between being strong-armed into an upgrade and Microsoft staying mum on the subject, it\u2019s no wonder users are confused, frustrated, and even upset. On the one hand, it\u2019s fair and even expected for a company to take steps to keep its product (and, in turn, its users) safe; on the other, suddenly making that product harder to access, potentially limiting the user base, and definitely confusing it isn\u2019t exactly the wisest business move.<\/p>\n<p>The issue is made worse by the scalpers that have (of course) already hoarded the available components only to sell them for ridiculously marked-up prices on eBay.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_the_Difference_Between_TPM_12_and_TPM_20\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"moka_anchor_WhatstheDifferenceBetweenTPM12andTPM20\">What\u2019s the Difference Between TPM 1.2 and TPM 2.0?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Though Microsoft is still unclear whether it\u2019ll be cool with the TPM 1.2 standard or ultimately opt for TPM 2.0, it\u2019s still worth knowing the difference between the two.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-90882 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.reviewgeek.com\/p\/uploads\/2021\/07\/fdcfd0cf.png\" alt=\"ASRock TPM2-S TPM Module Motherboard\" width=\"1600\" height=\"900\" data-crediturl=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/ASRock-TPM2-S-Module-Motherboard-V2-0\/dp\/B06XPR5943?tag=reviewgeek-20\" data-credittext=\"ASRock\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"imagecredit\"><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/ASRock-TPM2-S-Module-Motherboard-V2-0\/dp\/B06XPR5943?tag=reviewgeek-20\">ASRock<\/a><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/security\/information-protection\/tpm\/tpm-recommendations#:~:text=The%20TPM%201.2%20spec%20only,the%20SHA%2D1%20hashing%20algorithm.&amp;text=TPM%202.0%20enables%20greater%20crypto,signing%20and%20key%20generation%20performance.\">Microsoft states,<\/a> \u201cThe TPM 1.2 spec only allows for the use of RSA and the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/67241\/htg-explains-what-are-md5-sha-1-hashes-and-how-do-i-check-them\/\">SHA-1 hashing<\/a> algorithm.\u201d Likewise, it follows that up by saying, \u201cTPM 2.0 enables greater crypto agility by being more flexible with respect to cryptographic algorithms. TPM 2.0 supports newer algorithms, which can improve drive signing and key generation performance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Simply put, TPM 2.0 tech is newer than that of TPM 1.2, the latter of which has been around since 2011. Its encryption is stronger and more secure, and is better able to support newer algorithms. If your device is older than that, however, or if you built your own, that may not be the case.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, our sister site How-to-Geek has shared <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/287737\/how-to-check-if-your-computer-has-a-trusted-platform-module-tpm-chip\/\">a few ways<\/a> to check for yourself, like by checking the TPM Management tool or the UEFI firmware settings screen. It\u2019s also possible that you might need to contact your computer\u2019s manufacturer to find out, or see if they have a FAQ section on their site that lists the devices that do.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Enable_Your_Computers_TPM_Chip\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"moka_anchor_HowtoEnableYourComputersTPMChip\">How to Enable Your Computer\u2019s TPM Chip<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If you built your own PC, there\u2019s a slight chance that it might say it doesn\u2019t have TPM 2.0, or that it does but it isn\u2019t enabled. So if that\u2019s the case, you\u2019ll need to hop into the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/287737\/how-to-check-if-your-computer-has-a-trusted-platform-module-tpm-chip\/\">UEFI or BIOS<\/a> settings screen and enable it there. From there, simply enable it, save your settings, and reboot your computer. Be aware that there\u2019s a chance that your PC\u2019s TPM chip is also listed and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/167094\/how-to-use-the-windows-device-manager-for-troubleshooting\/\">disabled in your Device Manager<\/a> (however unlikely), so be sure to check there as well if it can\u2019t be enabled elsewhere.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Where_Can_You_Buy_a_TPM_Chip\"><\/span>Where Can You Buy a TPM Chip?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>For those that do need to buy a TPM chip for their rig, make sure to search for one that\u2019s sold as an add-on module. Double-check that the chip supports your computer\u2019s exact motherboard before clicking buy, and that you also snag any other hardware components, as well.<\/p>\n<p>As we mentioned earlier, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewgeek.com\/90224\/windows-11-requires-tpm-2-0-modules-so-scalpers-are-driving-up-prices\/\">scalpers wasted no time hoarding TPM chips (or marking them up for resell on eBay) upon hearing Microsoft\u2019s initial Windows 11 requirements. Your best bet would be to try and buy one directly from PC-building stores or part picker websites. Typically they retail for around $20-$30, so avoid paying much more than that if you can. And, of course, avoid eBay wherever possible.<\/p>\n<p>If you are able to find one, be sure to enable its encryption in your laptop or desktop\u2019s BIOS. Most computer manufacturers offer software that can help you access TPM features, too.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p>This is, understandably, a lot of information to process, especially because TPM chips are a niche component that Microsoft has never made a big deal about before. But don\u2019t fret, it\u2019s entirely possible that the tech giant will lower its hardware requirements for Windows 11 or decide to drop the TPM requirement altogether.
