Throngs of jubilant spectators placed the COVID-19 crisis in the rearview mirror Sunday night as they gathered along the East River for a mesmerizing July Fourth fireworks show.<\/p>\n

The dazzling, annual display marked a return to normalcy as spectators were able to enjoy the pyrotechnics devoid of lockdowns, social<\/a> distancing and mask requirements.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese are the most beautiful fireworks I have ever seen,\u201d said Denise Rivera Coladonato, a 39-year-old health care worker visiting from Charlotte, North Carolina.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is incredible. They are a lot louder than I thought they would be,\u201d said Coladonato as she watched the fireworks from a Midtown public viewing area on the FDR Drive at East 34th Street.<\/p>\n

At one point during the show, Coladonato was overcome by emotion.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s my first time here. I\u2019ve been to New York so many times \u2026 and I did not expect all this,\u201d she said while hugging her niece and tearing up.<\/p>\n

Coladonato\u2019s 7-year-old daughter, Natalie, was shocked at how loud the fireworks were.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s cool. They\u2019re really loud and a little bit scary but not really,\u201d she said with her fingers over her ears.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s kinda like they are coming closer to me but they are not.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another North Carolina resident, Lisa Powell, 56, called the event \u201cspectacular\u201d as she and her family took in the fireworks that were blasting over the East River from five Macy\u2019s barges.<\/p>\n

New Jersey resident Janette Rosa, 30, said Sunday marked the first time she\u2019s been to New York City for the Fourth of July. <\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re incredible. They are unlike any other. It\u2019s beautiful,\u201d said Rosa.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s way better. In my mind I thought once you see fireworks you see them all, but it\u2019s completely different.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last year, the fireworks were wrecked by the pandemic, with \u201cpop-up\u201d shows meant to discourage large gatherings.<\/p>\n

Earlier Sunday, other people in the Big App<\/a>le celebrated Independence Day with trip<\/a>s to the city\u2019s beaches and parks.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
