The House voted Wednesday to app<\/a>rove Speaker Nancy Pelosi\u2019s select committee to investigate the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. But by prejudging its conclusions and insisting on picking the majority of members, Pelosi has made the only inquiry that Americans could trust \u2014 a truly bipartisan one \u2014 impossible.<\/p>\n

Ten House Republicans voted to impeach President Donald Trump over what they said was his role in his supporters\u2019 attack on the Capitol, but just two of them voted to OK Pelosi\u2019s commission. That indicates it was created in bad faith.<\/p>\n

A bipartisan agreement on an investigation passed the House last month but failed in the Senate. It would\u2019ve given both parties subpoena power and let each pick five members with expertise in national security and law enforcement to examine security shortcomings that led to the Capitol debacle. Under Wednesday\u2019s resolution, Pelosi gets to appoint eight of the committee\u2019s 13 members; the other five \u201cshall be appointed after consultation with the minority leader\u201d \u2014 in other words, Pelosi decides those<\/em>, too.<\/p>\n

The committee is to investigate \u201cthe facts, circumstances and causes\u201d of the attack, as well as \u201cinfluencing factors that fomented\u201d it. But Pelosi has already decided what those are. \u201cOn that day, our temple of democracy was attacked by insurrectionists,\u201d she said in announcing her plan. \u201cThe white supremacy, the anti-Semitism, the Islamophobia, all the rest of it\u201d was \u201cso evident\u201d in the \u201cinsurrection incited by the president of the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pelosi picked a Republican (Liz Cheney of Wyoming) as one of her eight appointees, but other GOP members who voted for impeachment blasted Pelosi\u2019s partisan ploy. <\/p>\n

Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-Wash.) noted the speaker holds some responsibility for the Capitol\u2019s protection. \u201cBoth sides have things that need to be looked at and revealed,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd the credibility of it is just going to be shot.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rep. John Katko (R-NY), who also voted to impeach and worked with a Democratic House Homeland Security Committee colleague on the bipartisan bill, said Pelosi\u2019s version means \u201ca turbo-charged partisan exercise, not an honest fact-finding body that the American people and Capitol Police deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another impeacher, Rep. Anthony Gonzalez (R-Ohio), warned the committee \u201cwill end up being a partisan shouting match that accomplishes next to nothing and only serves to further divide us.\u201d<\/p>\n

But that\u2019s exactly what Nancy Pelosi wants \u2014 a chance to pounce and preen while claiming Republicans instigated an insurrection. Indeed, her other seven picks were dominated by high-profile voices in her two impeachments of Trump: Reps. Adam Schiff, Zoe Lofgren and Jamie Raskin, plus Bennie Thompson, who sued Trump over his \u201cgleeful support of violent white supremacists.\u201d<\/p>\n

The speaker thinks keeping Trump in the news<\/a> will boost Democrats in next year\u2019s elections. But it won\u2019t get to the bottom of the ugly events of Jan. 6.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
