“#’Black people still aren’t free’<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Far-left Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.), dismissed Independence Day Sunday as a holiday meant for white people before claiming: \u201cThis land is stolen land and Black people still aren\u2019t free.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen they say that the 4th of July is about American freedom, remember this: the freedom they\u2019re referring to is for white people,\u201d tweeted Bush<\/a>, a member of the progressive \u201cSquad\u201d of lawmakers that includes Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY). <\/p>\n

Bush, a Black Lives Matter activist who unseated longtime Rep. William Lacy Clay in a primary to represent her heavily Democratic district last year, previously used last month\u2019s signing of legislation making Juneteenth a federal holiday to push for reparations for slavery and defunding law enforcement.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s Juneteenth AND reparations. It\u2019s Juneteenth AND end police violence + the War on Drugs. It\u2019s Juneteenth AND end housing + education apartheid. It\u2019s Juneteenth AND teach the truth about white supremacy in our country,\u201d she tweeted on June 17. \u201cBlack liberation in its totality must be prioritized.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bush\u2019s July 4 tweet drew immediate backlash from social media<\/a> users on the right and on the left. <\/p>\n

\u201cYou make $175k a year of taxpayer money to rip the country\u2019s people that pay your salary,\u201d tweeted<\/a> radio host Clay Travis. \u201cShow me any unfree country in the world where that\u2019s possible. You can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a 40-year-old American descendent of slaves,\u201d tweeted<\/a> author and cultural critic Thomas Chatterton Williams. \u201cThe year is 2021, and I have been \u2018free\u2019 my entire life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAmerica is so awesome even people who aren\u2019t free can get elected to the United States Congress!\u201d chimed in Georgia radio host Erick Erickson. \u201cAmerica F\u2014 Yeah!\u201d<\/p>\n

Also Sunday, Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) posted a rambling tweet<\/a> diminishing the holiday. <\/p>\n

\u201cJuly 4th\u2026 & so, the Declaration of Independence says all men are created equal. Equal to what? What men? Only white men? Isn\u2019t it something that they wrote this in 1776 when African Americans were enslaved? They weren\u2019t thinking about us then, but we\u2019re thinking about us now!\u201d<\/p>\n

In a follow-up tweet, Waters wrote: \u201cFurther, the Dec. of Ind. says we hold these truths to be \u201cself-evident\u201d\u2026 yet: -17 states have enacted voter suppression laws -Supreme Court gutted Sec. 5 of the Voting Rights Act -George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Michael Brown, Sandra Bland, Tamir Rice. Need I say more?\u201d<\/p>\n

Former MSNBC host Toure echoed Bush\u2019s statement, tweeting<\/a>: \u201cF\u2013k Independence Day. Not only were we not free, the whole reason the Colonies wanted independence was because Britain was moving toward abolishing slavery. Why would Black people celebrate a day so wrapp<\/a>ed up in our enslavement?\u201d Toure included a link to an opinion piece he penned for the website The Grio headlined: \u201cF\u2013k Fourth of July: The only independence day I recognize is Juneteenth.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even The New York Times cast aspersions on one of the most important parts of the holiday Sunday, publishing a piece provocatively suggesting that Trump supporters have embraced the flag \u201cso fervently\u201d that liberals have \u201call but ceded the national emblem to the right.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Times published the piece weeks after editorial board member Mara Gay told MSNBC that she was \u201creally disturbed\u201d to see flags with slogans knocking President Biden, supporting Trump \u201cand [in] some cases, just dozens of American flags,\u201d flying from pick-up trucks during a weekend trip<\/a> to Long Island.<\/p>\n

The Times defended Gay\u2019s remarks, saying, \u201cHer argument was that Trump and many of his supporters have politicized the American flag.\u201d<\/p>\n

The scolding appeared not to dampen the spirits of millions of Americans who took part in July 4 celebrations across the country, including at the White House.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
