Joey Chestnut broke his own world record at the annual Nathan\u2019s Hot Dog Eating Contest Sunday \u2014 a Fourth of July feat much of America missed thanks to ESPN\u2019s shoddy live feed.<\/p>\n

Live footage from the contest in Coney Island cut out three times \u2014 including just as the 37-year-old eating champ hoovered up his 76th hot dog and bun in front of a packed Maimonides Park stadium.<\/p>\n

Chestnut eclipsed his previous record of 75 hot dogs and buns in 2020, when the competition was held at Nathan\u2019s headquarters in Williamsburg without an audience.<\/p>\n

Sunday\u2019s total topped that of Chestnut\u2019s closest competitor, Geoffrey Esper, by 26 dogs.<\/p>\n

Chestnut held the lead for the entirety of the 10-minute contest. ESPN\u2019s feed began to cut in and out in the last five minutes before going entirely dark as Chestnut chewed his 76th dog with second remaining on the clock.<\/p>\n

Fans were outraged to miss the historic finish.<\/p>\n

\u201c10 minutes, once a year, and you absolutely blew it, @espn,\u201d tweeted @notmalkinego<\/a>. \u201cafter all we\u2019ve been through, we deserve to watch joey chestnut without interruption.\u201d<\/p>\n

The victory marks Chestnut\u2019s 14th at the competition. Ranked number one in the world by Major League Eating, the California native has won all but one Nathan\u2019s contest since 2006.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had a pretty good idea I could do it,\u201d he told reporters after Sunday\u2019s monstrous victory. \u201cI just had to stay calm and not panic when things got a little bit rough, and made my body work for me\u201d<\/p>\n

Nearly 5,000 people from across the country packed the stadium for the 2021 competition, eager to get back to normal after the devastation of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

The day\u2019s events also included the women\u2019s hot dog eating competition. Winner Michelle Lesco, 37, demolished 30.75 dogs \u2013 seven more than the closest competitor.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a staple of New York,\u201d said Valerie Gagnon, 45, of Long Island. \u201cThis is what 4th of July is \u2013\u2013 it\u2019s American, it\u2019s hot dogs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Raed Jarrar, who works for Nathan\u2019s as president of its in-house \u201cBunBoy Nation\u201d hype team, noted the glorious weather.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe weather sucked the whole weekend, but today, God knows to shine his sun down on America for the Hot Dog Eating Contest,\u201d said Jarrar, 40.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor us to be back this year I think is a sign that Americans are now united, and that we are one strong people,\u201d he added. \u201cAnd we\u2019re united around hot dogs, and we\u2019re united around the buns. It\u2019s all about the hot dogs, it\u2019s all about the buns.\u201d<\/p>\n

An ESPN rep attributed the snafus to \u201ca problem with uplink service provided by a vendor at the site.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOur teams worked with the vendor to troubleshoot and resolve it quickly,\u201d the rep added.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
