Richard Donner, the directer of beloved films like \u201cSuperman\u201d and \u201cThe Goonies,\u201d has died. He was 91. <\/p>\n

The Bronx-born Donner died Monday, his wife Lauren Schuler Donner, who is also his business manager, confirmed to Deadline<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In addition to the Christopher Reeves \u201cSuperman\u201d films, he also directed 1987\u2019s \u201cLethal Weapon\u201d starring Danny Glover and Mel Gibson, 1997\u2019s \u201cConspiracy Theory\u201d with Gibson and Julia Roberts and 1985\u2019s cult classic \u201cLadyhawke,\u201d with Michelle Pfeiffer and Matthew Broderick.<\/p>\n

His \u201cLethal Weapon\u201d leading man Gibson once said of Donner<\/a>, \u201cThere\u2019s true humility about the man; he refers to himself as a traffic cop, but he\u2019s a f\u2014ing genius.\u201d<\/p>\n

Donner was infamously cut from the Superman sequel after going millions over budget, Collider reported<\/a>, and replaced by Richard Lester mid-production. But over 25 years after the DC hero flick stunned audiences, \u201cSuperman II: The Richard Donner Cut\u201d was released in 2006 as a re-edited director\u2019s cut with lost Man of Steel footage.<\/p>\n

After a long career helming classic television shows \u2014\u00a0\u201cRoute 66,\u201d \u201cThe Twilight Zone,\u201d \u201cThe Man From U.N.C.L.E.,\u201d \u201cGilligan\u2019s Island and \u201cPerry Mason\u201d to name just a few \u2014 Donner made his feature film directorial debut with the little-known 1968 Sammy Davis Jr. crime comedy\u00a0\u201cSalt & Pepper.\u201d<\/p>\n

Donner moved to the big screen full-time with the 1976 occult classics \u201cThe Omen\u201d starring Gregory Peck and Lee Remick.<\/p>\n

\u201cRichard Donner made the devil a child in \u2018The Omen,\u2019 invented the modern-day comic book movie with \u201cSuperman,\u201d and reinvented the buddy cop movie with Lethal Weapon.’\u201d writer-director Kevin Smith said in his Twitter<\/a> homage. \u201cI got to meet with him last year about a project. Guy was a natural-born storyteller. Thanks for all the flicks, Dick!\u201d<\/p>\n

Famed comic book writer Dan Slott also paid tribute<\/a>: \u201cRichard Donner\u2019s SUPERMAN is the DNA, the fundamental building block, that all good superhero movies<\/a> have been built from. It was the earnest leap of faith, the single bound, that made us all believe that a man could fly.\u201d<\/p>\n

When the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science<\/a>s paid tribute to the director-producer in 2017, Donner humbly said: \u201cThis industry is my friend. I love it. I never thought I\u2019d say this, but I want to thank the Academy.\u201d<\/p>\n
