They\u2019re squat dogs.<\/p>\n

It might seem like sacrilege to sell hot dogs that are any shape but oblong. However, one enterprising New Jersey butcher shop<\/a> claims to be reinventing the frankfurter with its new line of flat, round hot dogs<\/a>, which it says can better retain condiments and reduces the likelihood of choking. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe set out to improve the hot dog,\u201d Rastelli\u2019s told Fox News<\/a> of the flat frankfurter, which they created in response to soaring customer demand for pre-cut dogs. <\/p>\n

\u201cOur customers were accustomed to slicing their hot dog down the middle before grilling to increase surface area for caramelization and flavor,\u201d the meat merchant said of the squat dogs, which cost $18 for eight 3-oz patties online<\/a>. \u201cSo when the really busy moms and dads asked if we had any pre-sliced hot dogs, we started thinking.\u201d<\/p>\n

In accordance, Rastelli\u2019s, which also delivers meat nationwide, churned out a flat patty that looks like a hamburger and wouldn\u2019t fit in hot dog buns. However, just as square watermelons make<\/a> for easier storage, they felt the disc-like design allowed for more space to hold different sauces like a condiment canvas, rather than the traditional sausage link shape, from which toppings can easily tumble.<\/p>\n

The company also dispensed with the traditional casings, which they thought presented a choking hazard for children.<\/p>\n

In addition, the round hot dog purportedly saves time at the grocery store as \u201cnow we only have to buy one type of bun when we BBQ,\u201d insisted Rastelli\u2019s.<\/p>\n

However, the meat plugs divided foodies, with some thinking they had changed the ballpark frank as we know it. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe meat is clearly high quality, and the increased surface area invites more a) sweet char flavor and b) space for toppings,\u201d fawned Food and Wine Magazine\u2019s senior editor Maria Yagoda in a recent review<\/a> of the circular sausages. And while they don\u2019t have the \u201ccrisp, snapp<\/a>y bite\u201d of a standard frank, \u201cthe softness of the round dog offers a different kind of satisfaction,\u201d she added. <\/p>\n

However, traditionalist sausage supporters thought these wide wieners were literal \u201cbaloney.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHow is this different than bologna?\u201d wondered one meat lover on Twitter<\/a>. \u201cI actually don\u2019t know how hotdogs differ from bologna other than the shape.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eric Mittenthal, the National Hot Dog & Sausage Council president, seconded their sentiment in a statement to Fox. \u201cIt\u2019s great that someone has developed a marketing tool for another way to enjoy\u00a0hot dogs,\u201d he said. \u201cBut the flat hot dogs are also known as bologna.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, Rastelli\u2019s maintains that its creation does have some notable differences to bologna, including the fact that they chop \u2014 rather than emulsify or liquefy \u2014 its mixed Angus beef and pork fillings as is the case with its sandwich stuffing counterpart, Food and Wine reported.<\/a> The pork purveyor also swaddles the product in collagen casing and netting so it retains its shape.<\/p>\n

And it appears they\u2019re doing something right: the round hot dogs are out of stock.<\/p><\/div>\n
