\u201cA number of other American cities unfortunately are going through much, much worse [crime spikes], and that\u2019s where that [federal relief] money was targeted,\u2019\u2019 Mayor Bill de Blasio blathered Friday as he stuck to his guns on using none of the city\u2019s $6 billion from President Joe Biden\u2019s COVID-aid package to fight surging shootings and homicides.<\/p>\n

That is, he doubled down on his claim Thursday that Biden\u2019s recent suggestion that cities use relief money for cops was \u201cto certain cities that were dealing with challenges that are greater than ours.\u201d <\/p>\n

White House sources said later Thursday that Blas was \u201cincorrect,\u201d noting: \u201cCities like New York that are experiencing a spike in gun violence as a result of the pandemic are eligible to use [the]\u00a0money to hire additional police officers above a pre-pandemic baseline level to help address that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of course, Biden had never talked about using the COVID cash against crime until his pollsters recently discovered the public-safety issue is hurting Democrats nationwide. But that doesn\u2019t remove de Blasio\u2019s dunce cap. <\/p>\n

After all, Gotham has seen shootings more than double since 2019, far worse than Chicago (up \u201cjust 59 percent\u201d from 2019), for example. That\u2019s why polls have consistently shown crime and public safety to be the top issue in the mayoral race.<\/p>\n

Yet the\u00a0new\u00a0$98.7 billion city budget adopted last week boosts the NYPD budget just $200 million, far less than last summer\u2019s $1 billion cut, made to app<\/a>ease the \u201cDefund the police\u201d protesters. Meanwhile, the budget allots $250 million<\/em> to boost \u201cpublic awareness\u201d of the cop-policing Civilian Complaint Review Board.<\/p>\n

Bottom line: Lame-duck de Blasio can\u2019t be bothered by the public\u2019s concerns nor the president\u2019s guidance \u2014 let alone the simple truth.\u00a0\n <\/p><\/div>\n
