ROME, July 6 \u2013 A charity group asked the\u00a0European Union on Tuesday to\u00a0find\u00a0a\u00a0port\u00a0where it can dock to disembark\u00a0hundreds\u00a0of\u00a0migrants\u00a0it has\u00a0rescued in the central Mediterranean over recent days.<\/p>\n

Some 572 people, including 183 minors, are currently onboard\u00a0the Ocean Viking vessel, the SOS Mediterranee organization said after it picked them up in six operations in Maltese and Libyan search and\u00a0rescue\u00a0areas.<\/p>\n

The group said maritime authorities had not helped in the operations and urged the\u00a0European Union to intervene.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are calling upon the\u00a0EU\u00a0to at least coordinate the disembarkation of the 572 survivors currently aboard\u00a0our ship,\u201d it said in a statement.<\/p>\n

The statement did not give details of where the vessel was, but the marinetraffic.com website gave its position as between Malta and Sicily.<\/p>\n

Migrant\u00a0boat\u00a0departures from north Africa towards\u00a0Europe have picked up in 2021 after a decline in the previous few years.<\/p>\n

Scores of\u00a0migrants\u00a0have died in recent days following shipwrecks as they tried to cross the Mediterranean to reach Italy, one of the main routes into\u00a0Europe. <\/p>\n
