Iconoclast: Fear a Friendless Future<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cFriendlessness is on the rise,\u201d cautions The Week\u2019s Damon Linker<\/a>. \u201cThat\u2019s the troubling takeaway\u201d from a study showing the number of Americans with \u201cno close friends\u201d has risen \u201cfivefold over the past 30 years.\u201d It\u2019s not just \u201cbad for the lonely,\u201d it\u2019s \u201ca bad sign for our country and our society.\u201d We\u2019re \u201csocial<\/a>, communal creatures\u201d who \u201cenjoy engaging in common enterprises and the emotional intimacy that can follow.\u201d But the \u201cwasting away\u201d of civil society has led to \u201cvirtual communities\u201d more like \u201ccollective groups of topic-specific pen pals than real-world friendships.\u201d Without testing \u201cagainst the hard limits and constraints\u201d of \u201cthe physical world,\u201d ideas \u201ccan run wild,\u201d partly explaining \u201cwhy our politics have become much more polarized.\u201d Stark loneliness can make \u201ceven the most toxic forms of political association\u201d seem attractive. <\/p>\n

Conservative: Wokeness Kills Diversity<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIntellectual diversity at universities has greatly suffered,\u201d laments Aron Ravin at National Review<\/a>. \u201cBut it is not only intellectual diversity that suffers in today\u2019s college climate. Even the diversity that admissions officers favor, diversity of background, is weakened by wokeness.\u201d Some two-thirds of schools surveyed by the National Association of Scholars recently reported offering \u201cseparate, racially designated graduation ceremonies and residential areas.\u201d Which raises a tough question: \u201cHow will the broader student body reap the benefits of a diverse campus if the \u00adstudents opt into self-segregated programs?\u201d<\/p>\n

Libertarian: Aim High, Not Low in Energy<\/strong><\/p>\n

European researchers have determined that, \u201cto save the planet from catastrophic climate change, Americans will have to cut their energy use by more than 90 percent,\u201d fly just \u201conce every three years\u201d and \u201clive in housing no larger than 640 square feet\u201d for a family of four, reports Reason\u2019s Ronald Bailey<\/a>. But since \u201cthere are absolutely no examples of low-energy societies providing decent living standards,\u201d the researchers recommend a \u201cfundamental transformation,\u201d including free health, education and public transportation along with \u201cfairer income distribution.\u201d But the far better and easier solution is \u201cto aim for a high-energy planet,\u201d which will \u201cspur economic growth and innovation.\u201d Rather than forcing \u201cAmericans to live on the amount of energy currently available to Bolivians, the goal should be to enable people in energy-starved poor countries to gain access to \u00adenergy supplies currently enjoyed by average Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the right: Defund Biden\u2019s IRS<\/strong><\/p>\n

For the Internal Revenue Service to be the agency President Biden wants, \u201cit needs the $80 billion in extra funding\u201d he\u2019s proposing, The Wall Street Journal\u2019s William McGurn reasons<\/a>. If that money can \u201cbring in\u201d the estimated $700 billion a year it fails to collect from \u201ctax cheats\u201d and others, it will \u201cmore than pay for itself,\u201d at least according to the \u201cJoe Biden School\u201d of thought. Yet the \u201cMilton Friedman School\u201d would argue that \u201cthe best tax collection system\u201d is based on fair, simple and low taxes. Besides, considering the agency\u2019s past performance \u2014 the Lois Lerner scandal, say, and recent leaks of individuals\u2019 tax info \u2014 should we \u201ceven be talking about giving it more power\u201d?<\/p>\n

Sociologist: The Rise of Progressive Fascism<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIn many ways,\u201d warns Joel Kotkin at UnHerd<\/a>, Benito \u201cMussolini\u2019s \u00adnotion of fascism has become increasingly dominant .\u2009.\u2009. in the worldview of those progressives who typically see \u2018proto-fascism\u2019 lurking on the right.\u201d His \u201cidea of an economy controlled from above, with generous benefits but dominated by large business interests, is gradually supplanting the old liberal, capitalist model\u201d in the name of \u201cserving racial and gender \u2018equity,\u2019 as well as saving the planet.\u201d The Democratic Party is \u201cincreasingly a subsidiary of the corporate elite,\u201d as \u201ctoday\u2019s oligarchs\u201d push \u201cpolitically correct statements about climate change, gender and race, while still obtaining .\u2009.\u2009. unprecedented wealth.\u201d Opponents must aim \u201cto restore competition and protect consumers from the overweening power and vast wealth of the corporate elites.\u201d We need \u201ca \u00adreawakening of the spirit of resistance to authority that has long marked human progress.\u201d<\/p>\n
