Sun-worshipping fans of the \u201cSt-Tropez tan\u201d are in an uproar over the discontinuation of Bain de Soleil\u2019s 94-year-old Orange Gel\u00e9e sunscreen, which has promised sleek and glowy tanned skin for generations.<\/p>\n

Bayer, which has owned Bain de Soleil since 2014, halted production of the line in December 2019. Now, 3-ounce tubes of the brand\u2019s signature Orange Gel\u00e9e, which could once be purchased for $10 at your local drugstore, are selling at online resale sites such as eBay and Poshmark for upward of $200.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve used it all my life,\u201d said Thalia Papp<\/a>as, 67, an environmental consultant from Landenberg, Pa. \u201cUntil last year, I thought it would be there for me forever.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pappas is one of some 6,000 signees to an online petition<\/a> calling for Bayer to resume production of the beloved sunscreen. <\/p>\n

The product\u2019s one-of-a-kind scent and ability to keep her skin sleek after tanning led Pappas to jury-rig her own Orange Gel\u00e9e. She\u2019s tried mixing Bayer\u2019s Coppertone suntan lotion with orange and clove essential oils, but the homemade dupe pales in comparison to the original. <\/p>\n

\u201cNothing out there smells like it or compares in its color or texture and capability to make tanned skin glow,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

With such a strong outcry from consumers, Pappas said she doesn\u2019t understand why the skin-care line isn\u2019t being bought by a different personal care company, but suspects the discontinuation has to do with the product\u2019s minimal sunburn prevention. Orange Gel\u00e9e is less of a sunscreen and more of an after-tanning lotion \u2014 it barely offers protection from the sun with SPF 4 coverage. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s quintessential summer,\u201d said Pappas. \u201cAny girl back in the \u201970s and \u201980s used it.\u201d <\/p>\n

Originally called Antoine de Paris, the first iteration of Orange Gel\u00e9e was created in 1925 in Paris, where it gained popularity until branching out to the United States during the 1940s. The brand\u2019s French name translates to \u201cbath of the sun.\u201d<\/p>\n

When Melissa Savoy, a 30-year-old sun worshiper from Cape Cod, Mass., first heard that the lotion she grew up on was being fazed out, she stalked every store and site to get her orange-y hands on that inimitable product. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt [feels] like the beach \u2014 the texture, the color, the smell. You just don\u2019t get that anywhere else,\u201d said Savoy, who first started using the product as a 7-year-old.<\/p>\n

With summer in full swing, Savoy is hoarding her last Orange Gel\u00e9e bottle until she can find a secondhand-market stash within her price range.<\/p>\n

\u201cI saw one today for $140, but I\u2019m willing to spend no more than $100.\u201d <\/p>\n

Her mom, Pam, has been a devotee of the tube since its \u201980s heyday. <\/p>\n

\u201cI have no problems with my skin at all,\u201d said the 58-year-old. \u201cI\u2019m in my late 50s, so that says a lot.\u201d With only two tubes left, Pam is desperate to procure more product. <\/p>\n

But with tanning no longer in vogue and high-SPF sunscreen now considered a must \u2014 the American Academy of Dermatology recommends SPF 30 as a minimum \u2014 demand for Bain de Soleil has been in decline.<\/p>\n

According to a statement from Bayer, it \u201cdiscontinued the production and sale of Bain de Soleil products due to limited consumer interest.\u201d <\/p>\n

The company, which sold the Coppertone brand to Beiersdorf last year, added: \u201cGiven the fondness for the product, we can understand the disappointment.\u201d<\/p>\n

One such disappointed die-hard isn\u2019t even a beach babe. <\/p>\n

Sister CarolAnn Clark, 70, a nun from San Diego, signed the petition when she found out that the Orange Gel\u00e9e was available only for hundreds of dollars.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just don\u2019t like the smell of other lotions,\u201d said Clark, who has been using it since childhood. \u201cI don\u2019t get burns with it. I don\u2019t know what it was about the Bain de Soleil that just protected me from everything.\u201d <\/p>\n

Since her siblings have battled skin cancer, Clark credits her untarnished skin to the lotion, which she used while walking her Maltipoo and for other gentle pursuits. <\/p>\n

\u201cI use it to protect my skin in the backyard while I\u2019m feeding the birds,\u201d she said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
