“#DHS chief denounces \u2018lawless anarchists\u2019 in Portland amid ongoing protests<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n The head of the Department of Homeland Security is denouncing ongoing violence in Portland, ripping the protesters in Oregon\u2019s largest city as \u201clawless anarchists\u201d who have wreaked havoc for nearly 50 consecutive days.<\/p>\n

Acting Secretary Chad Wolf issued a lengthy statement Thursday hours before meeting with federal law enforcement officials in Portland, where a \u201cviolent mob\u201d has overtaken the city as local political leaders \u201crefuse to restore order\u201d amid 47 straight days of protests, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cEach night, lawless anarchists destroy and desecrate property, including the federal courthouse, and attack the brave law enforcement officers protecting it,\u201d Wolf wrote. \u201cA federal courthouse is a symbol of justice \u2013 to attack is to attack America.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wolf\u2019s statement also accused local and state leaders of \u201cplacing blame\u201d on law enforcement officers while simultaneously requesting fewer cops, resulting in a \u201cfailed response\u201d that has only served to bolster the \u201cviolent mob\u201d each day.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis siege can end if state and local officials decide to take app<\/a>ropriate action instead of refusing to enforce the law,\u201d Wolf wrote. \u201cDHS will not abdicate its solemn duty to protect federal facilities and those within them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mayor Ted Wheeler, meanwhile, tweeted Thursday he was aware that DHS leadership was in Portland.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe haven\u2019t been invited to meet with them, and if we were, we would decline,\u201d Wheeler wrote.<\/p>\n

Wheeler said Wolf spoke to him Tuesday about the ongoing \u201cdemonstration activity\u201d in Portland and asked how his agency could help. Wheeler said his immedia<\/a>te concern was the \u201cviolence\u201d federal officers brought to the city\u2019s streets.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe do not need or want their help,\u201d Wheeler tweeted Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Federal officers late Thursday responded to protesters at two federal buildings in downtown Portland, where they were met with gas, smoke and impact munitions, The Oregonian reports.<\/p>\n

About 200 demonstrators went to police precinct in the city\u2019s East Burnside section, where several cops were outside in riot gear, the news<\/a>paper reports.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho do you protect?\u201d protesters chanted. \u201cWho do you serve?\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s unclear how many arrested were made by Portland police or federal officers, The Oregonian reports.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, federal law enforcement officers have been using unmarked vehicles to detain protesters since at least Tuesday, Oregon Public Radio reports.<\/p>\n

Federal officers have charged at least 13 people with crimes connected to the protests. One protester was also left with a fractured skull Saturday after being shot with less-lethal munitions, the outlet reports.<\/p>\n

\u201cFeds are driving around, grabbing people off the streets,\u201d protester Conner O\u2019Shea said in video provided to OPB. \u201cI didn\u2019t do anything f\u2014king wrong. I\u2019m recording this. I had to let somebody know that this is what happens.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
