GUNTUR, India, July 5 \u2013 The grandfather of an\u00a0Indian-American\u00a0astronaut\u00a0said he was \u201coverwhelmed with joy\u201d as she prepares to become only the second\u00a0Indian-born woman to visit space.<\/p>\n

Sirisha Bandla, 33, who was born in Guntur district of India\u2019s southern Andhra Pradesh state, will be a part of billionaire entrepreneur Richard Branson\u2019s\u00a0Virgin\u00a0Galactic\u2019s test flight on July 11 that will travel<\/a> beyond the edge of the earth\u2019s atmosphere.<\/p>\n

A successful flight by Branson aboard\u00a0Virgin\u2019s VSS Unity spaceplane would mark a milestone in the race to usher in a new era of private commercial space travel.<\/p>\n

Branson\u2019s mission will be the 22nd flight test for VSS Unity, and the company\u2019s fourth\u00a0crewed spaceflight.<\/p>\n

Bandla, who developed an early interest in space, completed her studies in the field before joining\u00a0Virgin\u00a0Galactic\u00a0in 2015.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am so incredibly honored to be a part of the amazing\u00a0crew\u00a0of #Unity22, and to be a part of a company whose mission is to make space available to all,\u201d Bandla said in a tweet.<\/p>\n

Her grandfather, Dr Ragaiah, a retired scientist who goes by one name, told Reuters she had always been fascinated by space.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom the beginning, she was very much fascinated towards the sky, looking at the sky, space, how to enter space and what is there,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am very\u00a0happy and overwhelmed\u00a0with joy. My second granddaughter, she is going to space.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bandla is the second woman born in India to enter space after Kalpana Chawla, who died in the Columbia Space Shuttle disaster in 2003.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
