West Virginians choosing not to receive a\u00a0COVID-19\u00a0vaccine\u00a0are entering a \u201cdeath lottery,\u201d the state\u2019s governor said, as the portion of residents fully inoculated against the virus hovers around 46.4%.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Gov. Jim Justice, whose state offered multiple lottery incentives to people who received a vaccine, said convincing younger people to get the shot continues to be a challenge. While 77.2% of adults over 65 are vaccinated, the rate drops to 53.3% for those ages 12 and up.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen it really boils right down to it, they\u2019re in a lottery to themselves,\u201d\u00a0he told ABC News.<\/a>\u00a0\u201cWe have a lottery, you know, that basically says, \u2018If you\u2019re vaccinated, we\u2019re going to give you stuff.\u2019 Well, you\u2019ve got another lottery going on. And it\u2019s the death lottery.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, Justice will announce winners of the third round of the\u00a0\u201cDo it for Babydog\u201d<\/a>\u00a0lottery. The contest is named after Justice\u2019s English bulldog, according to the state\u2019s vaccination website. This round\u2019s prizes include $1 million cash, weekend getaways, custom outfitted trucks, college scholarships, hunting licenses, fishing licenses, rifles and shotguns.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The state plans to draw six rounds of winners, with anyone who has received a shot eligible to enter.\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to state data,\u00a0<\/a>West Virginia has seen over 164,100 cases of COVID-19 and currently has a statewide testing positivity rate of 1.26%. The state has recorded just shy of 3,000 deaths since the outbreak began, with current hospitalizations at lows not seen since last spring.\u00a0\n <\/div>\n
