LONDON \u2014 The market for non-fungible tokens (NFTs) surged to new highs in the second quarter, with $2.5 billion in\u00a0sales\u00a0so far this year, up from just $13.7 million in the\u00a0first\u00a0half\u00a0of 2020, marketplace data showed.<\/p>\n

An\u00a0NFT\u00a0is a crypto asset, representing an intangible digital item such as an image, video, or in-game<\/a> item. Owners of\u00a0NFTs are recorded on blockchain, allowing an\u00a0NFT\u00a0to be traded as a stand-in for the digital asset it represents.<\/p>\n

Sales\u00a0volumes have remained high after\u00a0NFTs exploded in popularity early this year. Monthly\u00a0sales\u00a0volumes on OpenSea, a major\u00a0NFT\u00a0marketplace, reached a record high in June.<\/p>\n

Some\u00a0NFT\u00a0enthusiasts see them as collectibles with intrinsic value because of their cultural significance, while others treat them as an investment, speculating on rising prices.<\/p>\n

Buyers have mostly totaled 10,000 to 20,000 per week since March, outnumbering sellers, according to NonFungible.com, which aggregates\u00a0NFT\u00a0transactions on the ethereum blockchain.<\/p>\n

Total\u00a0sales\u00a0volume\u00a0estimates vary depending on which\u00a0NFT\u00a0transactions are included.<\/p>\n

Dapp<\/a>Radar, which tracks\u00a0sales\u00a0across multiple blockchains, said\u00a0volumes hit just under $2.5 billion for the\u00a0first\u00a0half\u00a0of\u00a02021. But NonFungible.com\u2019s figure is $1.3 billion, excluding around $8 billion of \u201cDeFi\u201d (decentralized finance)\u00a0NFTs.<\/p>\n

Both sites only track\u00a0sales\u00a0that occur on the blockchain, also known as \u201con-chain\u201d transactions. Some of the biggest\u00a0NFT\u00a0sales, such as those at auction houses, have part of the transaction take place \u201coff-chain,\u201d meaning they must be manually added to the data.<\/p>\n

In March, a digital image sold for a record $69.3 million at Christie\u2019s as an\u00a0NFT. No\u00a0NFT\u00a0sale has come close since. The second most expensive known\u00a0NFT\u00a0sale was a \u201cCryptoPunk\u201d which fetched $11.8 million at Sotheby\u2019s.<\/p>\n

The U.S. National Basketball Association Top Shot marketplace, which allows fans to buy and trade\u00a0NFTs in the form of video highlights, has seen\u00a0volumes shrink and buyers drop to 246,000 in June from 403,000 in March. The average price of a Top Shot \u201cmoment\u201d slumped to $27 in June, after peaking at $182 in February.<\/p>\n

But as some\u00a0NFT\u00a0types become less popular, others take off.<\/p>\n

The Bored Ape Yacht Club, a set of 10,000 unique digital ape\u00a0NFTs, has become a hit among collectors. The average ape sold on OpenSea as of July 1 for $3,600, up 1,574% from the launch price of $215 in April. Total\u00a0sales\u00a0have jumped to $61 million, according to the club\u2019s creators, U.S.-based Yuga Labs.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
