The British co-founder and CEO of a $2 billion Miami-based startup says he can\u2019t get back into the US because of what he called the \u201cbroken\u201d US immigration system.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m banned from entering the US until next year. Yep, it sucks,\u201d tweeted<\/a> Harry Hurst, the co-CEO of Pipe, which helps startups with recurring revenues get capital.<\/p>\n

\u201cUS immigration is broken and we need reform,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Hurst said he was already app<\/a>roved for his latest O-1 visa, the third one he\u2019s gotten, in December. O-1 visas are reserved for people with \u201ca demonstrated record of extraordinary achievement,\u201d according <\/a>to US Citizenship and Immigration Services.<\/p>\n

However, Hurst said, he now can\u2019t get an appointment at the US Embassy in London to get the visa actually stamped into his passport. He said that in the past, that part of the process \u201chas always been merely procedural.\u201d<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve lived and paid taxes in the US for ~7 yrs. I\u2019ve run companies that have directly employed 100\u2019s, and provided contract work to 1000\u2019s of US citizens.<\/p>\n

The embassy said it\u2019s understaffed and that he won\u2019t be able to make an appointment until next year, according to Hurst.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt turns out, during COVID the embassy operated a week on, week off schedule so now they\u2019re over a year behind on appointments,\u201d he said in a Twitter<\/a> thread. \u201cThey will give emergency appointments, but I\u2019ve tried and I apparently don\u2019t qualify \u2013 though there\u2019s no guidance on what does qualify either.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hurst noted that he\u2019s made huge contributions to US society during his career as an entrepreneur. Before co-founding Pipe, Hurst started an on-demand car-rental service called Skurt about seven years ago.<\/p>\n
