NEW DELHI \u2014 Bollywood icon Dilip Kumar, hailed as the \u201cTragedy King\u201d and one of Hindi cinema\u2019s greatest actors, died Wednesday in a Mumbai hospital after a prolonged illness. He was 98.<\/p>\n

The \u201cTragedy King\u201d title came from Kumar\u2019s numerous serious roles. In several, his character died as a frustrated lover and a drunkard. He also was known as Bollywood\u2019s only Method actor for his expressive performances identifying a character\u2019s emotions.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Kumar was hospitalized twice last month after he complained of breathlessness, and his family tweeted \u201cwith a heavy heart and profound grief\u201d the announcement of his passing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cDilip Kumar will be remembered as a cinematic legend. He was blessed with unparalleled brilliance, due to which audiences across generations were enthralled. His passing away is a loss to our cultural world,\u201d Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a tweet that also offered his condolences to Kumar\u2019s family and admirers.<\/p>\n

\u201cAn institution has gone,\u201d Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan tweeted. \u201cWhenever the history of Indian Cinema will be written, it shall always be \u2018before Dilip Kumar, and after Dilip Kumar\u2019 ..\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the end of an era,\u201d filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar said.<\/p>\n

He was born Muhammad Yusuf Khan, a Muslim, on Dec. 11, 1922. His Pathan family hailed from Peshawar, in what became Pakistan after Partition, and he visited his ancestral home in the late 1980s.<\/p>\n

He changed his name as he debuted in Bollywood, the Hindi-language film industry centered in Mumbai, with \u201cJwar Bhata,\u201d or \u201cSea Tides,\u201d in 1944.\u00a0<\/p>\n

His career spanned over six decades with over 60 films. His first major box-office hits were \u201cJugnu,\u201d or \u201cFirefly,\u201d in 1947 in which he starred alongside Noor Jehan, and the 1948 film \u201cShaheed,\u201d or \u201dMartyr.\u201d<\/p>\n

He played a variety of characters \u2014 a romantic hero in \u201cAndaz,\u201d a swashbuckler in \u201cAan,\u201d a dramatic drunkard in \u201cDevdas,\u201d a comic role in \u201cAzaad,\u201d a Muslim prince in the historical epic \u201cMughal-e-Azam\u201d and a robber in the social<\/a> movie \u201cGanga Jamuna.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mehboob Khan\u2019s blockbuster \u201cAan\u201d in 1952 was his first film in Technicolor and was among a string of light-hearted roles he took at the suggestion of his psychiatrist to shed his \u201cTragedy King\u201d image.<\/p>\n

He starred in many social drama films like \u201cFootpath\u201d, \u201cNaya Daur\u201d (\u201cNew Era\u201d), \u201cMusafir\u201d (\u201cTravel<\/a>ler\u201d) and \u201cPaigham\u201d (\u201cMessage\u201d) in 1950s.<\/p>\n

His top female co-stars included Madhubala, Nargis, Nimmi, Meena Kumari, Kamini Kaushal and Vyjanthimala.<\/p>\n

In 1966,\u202fDilip Kumar\u202fmarried Saira Banu, who was 22 years younger than him, and the couple acted in \u201cGopi,\u201d \u201cSagina Mahato\u201d and \u201cBairaag.\u201d They had no children.<\/p>\n

In 1961, he produced and starred in \u201cGanga Jamuna\u201d in which he and his brother Nasir Khan played the title roles. It was the only film he produced. Indian media reports say he declined the role of Sherif Ali in David Lean\u2019s \u201cLawrence of Arabia\u201d in 1962. The role went to Egyptian actor Omar Sharif.<\/p>\n

He took a break in the late \u201970s but returned with a character role in the successful \u201cKranti,\u201d or \u201cRevolution\u201d in 1981. He continued playing key roles in films such as \u201cShakti,\u201d \u201cKarma\u201d and \u201cSaudagar.\u201d His last film was \u201cQila\u201d (\u201cFort\u201d) in 1998.<\/p>\n

In 1994, he was given the \u201cDadasaheb Phalke\u201d award, the highest honor for contributions to Indian cinema. He also served in the upper house of Indian Parliament after being nominated for a six-year term.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
