\n Tension between the White House and Chicago\u2019s mayor took a personal turn Thursday \u2013 as press secretary Kayleigh McEnany referred to Lori Lightfoot as a \u201cderelict mayor\u201d during a briefing.<\/p>\n

McEnany made the remark as she shifted her attention to Chicago\u2019s recent spate of gun violence after being asked about President Trump\u2019s focus on the coronavirus pandemic, the Chicago Tribune reports.<\/p>\n

Lightfoot, in turn, later called McEnany a \u201cKaren,\u201d or social media<\/a> shorthand for an entitled, meddling, typically middle-aged white woman.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut there are other things the president has to focus on: namely, Democrat cities not controlling their streets, namely the mayor of Chicago \u2013 people dying in her \u2013 on the streets of her city every weekend,\u201d McEnany said, according to a White House transcript<\/a>. \u201cAnd the president sent her a letter saying, \u2018You must secure your city.’\u201d<\/p>\n

McEnany returned to the topic later in the briefing in response to a question about Trump claiming that more white people are killed by cops than their black counterparts, the transcript shows.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve listed for you the names of these kids who have died across the country,\u201d McEnany said. \u201cIt is unacceptable, and under this president, he\u2019ll take action. And the derelict mayor of Chicago should step up and ask for federal help because she\u2019s doing a very poor job at securing her streets.\u201d<\/p>\n

In response, Lightfoot took to Twitter and posted: \u201cHey, Karen. Watch your mouth.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lightfoot\u2019s tweet, which was liked nearly 100,000 times as of early Friday, generated a wide variance of replies, including some that noted \u201cbigotry\u201d in other responses to the Democrat\u2019s post.<\/p>\n

\u201cBunch of Trump bots and racist right wingers calling themselves out,\u201d one reply read. \u201cFor real, potus and crew need to keep Chicago out their mouth!\u201d<\/p>\n

Other replies to Lightfoot\u2019s tweet included a suggestion that she ask for federal help since she \u201cclearly can\u2019t get the shootings and murders\u201d in her city under control.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe lives of those murdered do matter,\u201d one response read.<\/p>\n

White House officials did not reply to a request for comment in response to Lightfoot\u2019s tweet, Fox News<\/a> reports.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
