Remaining in Afghanistan forever never made sense, but a rushed, chaotic departure of US forces \u2014 as that took place at Bagram Airfield last week \u2014 is senseless, too.<\/p>\n

Afghan soldiers who\u2019ll now defend the base were caught off guard when generators suddenly shut down and lights went out as they sat for dinner.\u00a0Even the facility\u2019s new Afghan commander, Gen. Mir Asadullah Kohistani, didn\u2019t know the Americans had skedaddled until later.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe [heard] some rumor that the Americans had left . . . and finally by 7 o\u2019clock in the morning . . . it was confirmed,\u201d Kohistani said. <\/p>\n

The move set off a mad rush by looters to clean out the place. It also fueled resentment among America\u2019s Afghan allies. \u201cIn one night, [the Americans] lost all the\u00a0good will of 20 years\u00a0by leaving the way they did,\u201d one soldier told the Associated Press.<\/p>\n

The US pullout always risked a return to power of the Taliban, who still maintain ties to al Qaeda and who\u2019ve already retaken more than 150 districts. But it didn\u2019t have to enrich <\/em>the extremists, who\u2019ve captured impressive stores of US equipment, including Humvees, tanks and assault weapons. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe loss of terrain and the rapidity of that loss of terrain has to be concerning\u201d because morale \u201cmatters,\u201d frets US Army Gen. Austin Scott Miller, who\u2019s overseeing the withdrawal. \u201cWhat you don\u2019t want to have happ<\/a>en is that the people lose hope.\u201d<\/p>\n

President Joe Biden argues that post-pullout, we can use all our tools\u00a0to \u201cdefend ourselves\u201d as needed, while maintaining the status quo indefinitely could cost trillions and risk more US lives. Fair enough \u2014 but surely even Biden\u2019s folks could\u2019ve taken care to depart without making it seem like all is already lost.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
