He passed away in his sleep, at his home in New York City.<br \/>\n<!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post -->Downey is best known as the director behind the iconic underground satire, <strong><em>Putney Swope<\/em><\/strong>, a much-celebrated anti-establishment film. Downey also worked as an actor, cinematographer, and screenwriter, in addition to working on television, including three episodes of <em><strong>The Twilight Zone<\/strong><\/em>. The famed director was father to <em><strong>Iron Man<\/strong><\/em> star <strong>Robert Downey Jr.<\/strong> and actress <strong>Allyson Downey<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_Life_and_Legacy\"><\/span>A Life and Legacy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A life-long New Yorker and husband of bestselling author Rosemary Rogers, Downey began work in the film industry as a cinematographer in the early 50\u2019s, before beginning to act and direct regularly. A pioneering underground filmmaker, he is well-known for minimal budget films with\u00a0counterculture agendas.<\/p>\n<p>His films like <em><strong>Chafed Elbows<\/strong><\/em>, a 1966 still-image film, used absurdist and manic humor to great effect. Releasing in 1969, <strong><em>Putney Swope<\/em><\/strong> satirized the advertising world of Madison Avenue, commenting on questions of corporate corruption and white power structures. The film followed a Black executive who upends the advertising industry after being accidentally placed in charge of a big firm. <em>Putney Swope<\/em> changed the tide for Downey and, as a mainstream release,\u00a0exposed his work to a much wider audience. The film made New York Magazine\u2019s list of 10 top films of the year. The film is currently streaming on The Criterion Channel and Tubi.<\/p>\n<p>The following year, Downey gave his son and namesake Robert Downey Jr his very first acting credit as Puppy in the surreal drama <strong><em>Pound<\/em><\/strong>. The film centered around several dogs, a cat, and a penguin waiting to be euthanized.<\/p>\n<p>Downey served as a second unit director on the 1971 Dick Van Dyke film <em><strong>Cold Turkey<\/strong><\/em> and his 1972 film <em><strong>Greaser\u2019s Palace<\/strong><\/em> presented at the Telluride Film Festival<br \/>\n<!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post_2 -->His other films include <em><strong>Sticks and Bones<\/strong><\/em>, <em><strong>Up The Academy<\/strong><\/em>, <em><strong>Rented Lips<\/strong><\/em>, <em><strong>Too Much Sun<\/strong><\/em>, the documentary <em><strong>Rittenhouse Square<\/strong><\/em>, and more.
