“#Twitter<\/a> suspends professor over posts mocking China’s Xi Jinping<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\u200bTwitter temporarily suspended a New Zealand professor after she mocked the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party and President Xi Jingping.<\/p>\n

Anne-Marie Brady, a professor at the University of Canterbury, wrote two tweets<\/a> making fun of China and Xi celebrating the centennial of the Communist Party.<\/p>\n

She posted a Sydney Morning Herald story headlined \u201cXi\u2019s hollow 100th birthday celebration for the Chinese Communist Party\u201d by adding \u201calternative headline: Xi: its my Party and I\u2019ll cry if I want to,\u201d referring to the Lesley Gore hit song from 1963.<\/p>\n

In another, she posted a photo of a dour-looking Xi flanked by two Chinese officials on Saturday, writing, \u201cA picture is worth a thousand words.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Sunday, Brady said, Twitter temporarily suspended her account, to which she commented: \u201cSeems one must never make fun of the Dear Leader.\u201d<\/p>\n

Twitter didn\u2019t explain Brady\u2019s suspension, other than posting a \u201cThis account is temporarily restricted\u201d notice on the tweets.<\/p>\n

Twitter\u2019s action caught the attention of Edward Lucas,<\/a> a columnist for London\u2019s Sunday Times news<\/a>paper, who defended Brady, an expert on China\u2019s attempts to exercise its influence around the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cTwitter has not explained what prompted this,\u201d Lucas noted in the column. \u201cBrady received only an automated warning that she may have \u2018violated\u2019 the social media platform\u2019s rules. But the decision probably results from a concerted campaign by the Chinese Communist Party\u2019s online agents.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even after having her account restored, Brady took a shot at the social media giant.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

\u201cEnough complaints usually trigger an automated block. After I had stoked a furor on Twitter and sent umpteen complaints, her account was restored. Less prominent victims of Chinese censorship would have scantier chances of redress,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Brady thanked Lucas<\/a> for intervening and linked to Lucas\u2019 column.<\/p>\n

Twitter denied the assertion that it suspended Brady at the behest of the Chinese government.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n

She also took a shot at Twitter.<\/p>\n

\u201cSeems like @Twitter may have briefly forgotten they don\u2019t work for Xi Jinping,\u201d Brady wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In a statement, Twitter said it adds temporary notices when it \u201cdetects unusual activity from an account,\u201d until it gets confirmation from the account\u00a0owner.<\/p>\n

The social media giant also denied\u200b that\u200b it suspended the account due to pressure from the Chinese government.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo set the record straight, the assertion that Twitter is in coordination with any government to suppress speech has no basis in fact whatsoever,\u201d Twitter said. \u201cWe advocate for a free, global and open internet and remain a staunch defender of freedom of expression.\u201d\u200b<\/p>\n
