“#Lefty DSA-backed candidates lose most City Council races<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

City Council candidates backed by the Democratic Social<\/a>ists of America lost in four of six races as the makeup of the city\u2019s lawmaking chamber was further reshaped by the ouster of several incumbents, nearly complete primary election results show.<\/p>\n

The DSA\u2019s losses this cycle come after the lefties notched a string of victories in recent years that included Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez\u2019s ouster of the former head of the Queens Democratic Party, Joe Crowley, from Congress. <\/p>\n

And they come as another progressive group, the Working Families Party, managed to notch a slew of wins \u2014 sometimes at the DSA\u2019s expense. <\/p>\n

In central Brooklyn, DSA-endorsed tenant activist Michael Hollingsworth lost to WFP-backed Crystal Hudson by 8 percentage points in the ranked-choice vote, ultimately netting 46 percent of the vote.<\/p>\n

The contest in the 35th District was among the most fiercely contested in the whole city as it served as a grudge match between powerful local Congressman Hakeem Jeffries and lefty activists who powered the recent wins of Assemblywoman Phara Souffrant Forrest and state Sen. Jabari Brisport.<\/p>\n

Both of the freshman state lawmakers defeated candidates with close ties to the Brooklyn Democratic political establishment to win their posts. <\/p>\n

All told, more than $800,000 in private and public funds were raised by the candidates in that one race to represent a large swath of\u00a0Fort Greene,\u00a0Prospect Heights and Crown Heights.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe DSA had a purity test, so you actually had to subscribe to their socialist ideas and agenda \u2014 including defunding the police,\u201d said former Councilman David Greenfield, who now runs the Met Council on Jewish Poverty, a non-profit that provides social services across the city. \u201cBut the WFP was a lot more flexible, that if you were left-of-center, they were willing to work with you.\u201d<\/p>\n

The DSA-backed candidate in nearby Park Slope suffered a similar fate. <\/p>\n

Bradon West netted just 43 percent of the vote in District 39 under the ranked-choice runoff, coming in a distant second to Shahana Hanif, a former staffer to the area\u2019s current Councilman Brad Lander. <\/p>\n

Hanif is a DSA member who failed to get the organization\u2019s endorsement. Instead, she scored the backing of the WFP and of Ocasio-Cortez. <\/p>\n

The story repeated in eastern Queens\u2019s District 23 where Jaslin Kaur lost and in The Bronx\u2019s District 14 where Adolfo Abreu came in third. <\/p>\n

A veteran political operative ascribed blame for DSA\u2019s low success rate on picking battles that are difficult to win. <\/p>\n

\u201cThey made a decision they were going to build in areas of the city that aren\u2019t terribly friendly to the DSA \u2014 like the west Bronx and eastern Queens,\u201d said a veteran Brooklyn political operative,\u201d said the Brooklyn political operative. <\/p>\n

\u201cThese are just areas where Hillary dominated. This is not turf where Bernie had any votes.\u201d<\/p>\n

The only two DSA candidates who won \u2014 Tiffany Cab\u00e1n (western Queens) and Alexa Avil\u00e9s (Sunset Park) \u2014 also scored WFP backing and carried districts that have long been friendly to lefty activists. <\/p>\n

But all hope was not lost for New York\u2019s left, as the 2021 election cycle was general<\/a>ly more successful for candidates backed by the progressive but not socialist Working Families Party. <\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ve built a bench, unlike other factions of the left in this city,\u201d said Olivia Lapeyrolerie, City Hall\u2019s former deputy press secretary, of the progressive organization. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe WFP has been doing the really hard work of developing and cultivating talent that I think is going to have a really powerful impact on city politics for years to come,\u201d Lapeyrolerie added. \u201cI think we\u2019re going to see a Council that\u2019s really going to use their full weight to check the mayor in ways that we haven\u2019t seen in a while.\u201d<\/p>\n

One WFP candidate even managed to defeat an incumbent council member. Political organizer Sandy Nurse toppled Councilwoman Darma Diaz (D-Cypress Hills). <\/p>\n

Meanwhile, liberal neighborhood activist Kristin Richardson Jordan established a narrow 100-vote lead over Councilman Bill Perkins (D-Harlem), who has battled severe health issues in recent years. <\/p>\n

The City Council, which is slated to be majority-women, will be full of newcomers in 2022, since 35 of the body\u2019s members are term-limited at the end of 2021.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
