Tech and media moguls at the Allen & Co. Sun Valley conference started their first full day of sessions Wednesday with a potentially touchy panel about politics in the workplace.<\/p>\n

After a casual outdoor breakfast, Strip<\/a>e\u2019s Patrick Collison, Shopify\u2019s Tobias Lutke, Flickr\u2019s Stewart Butterfield and former American Express CEO Ken Chenault discussed how companies should respond to current events without crossing the line.<\/p>\n

They spoke in front of an outdoor crowd that included some of the world\u2019s most powerful people \u2014 including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who wore reflective silver aviators and sat alongside his girlfriend Lauren S\u00e1nchez.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Chenault \u2014 a rare African-American attendee at the overwhelmingly white conference \u2014 argued that companies had a responsibility to take political positions on issues like voting rights, a source said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That put him at odds with Lutke, who on Wednesday expressed views similar to those he issued to Shopify employees in May, telling them via a memo to stay focused on the company\u2019s mission instead of social issues.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cShopify is also not the government. We cannot solve every societal problem here,\u201d Lutke wrote,\u00a0according\u00a0to Business Insider<\/a>, reminding them that the company is \u201cnot a family.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

While attendees app<\/a>eared sympathetic to calls for embracing social justice issues in the workplace, some showed \u201cconcern about distraction, productivity losses, and cultural upheaval inside teams\u201d if companies take strong stances on social issues, one source said.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo way to know where the audience was on this,\u201d the source added. \u201cPeople tip-toe around it because it is political\u00a0kryptonite.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another panel on \u201cCrime and Reform\u201d was later held with New York Police Department Chief of Department Rodney K. Harrison, Congresswoman Karen Bass (D-Calif.), and Alice Johnson, a criminal justice reform advocate who was released from a life sentence for cocaine trafficking\u00a0after being pardoned last year by then-President Donald Trump. <\/p>\n

The session focused on ways to reduce crime without increasing use of prisons, an attendee said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

CNN host Van Jones\u2014 who was attending alongside fellow anchor Anderson Cooper \u2014 emphasized the same message afterward, taking the stage and urging attendees to \u201cinvest in solutions other than prison.\u201d<\/p>\n

The ongoing\u00a0crime surge in cities\u00a0may have dulled attendees\u2019 receptiveness to calls for criminal justice reform, a second attendee said.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of people are coming in from New York and San Francisco where there\u2019s been an increase in crime,\u201d the attendee added.\u00a0<\/p>\n

After the discussion, attendees left the amphitheater and walked across the resort to enjoy a lunch of salad, glazed shrimp and fruit cobbler next to Sun Valley\u2019s duck pond.\u00a0<\/p>\n

After lunch, Bill Gates\u2019 scandal-plagued money manager Michael Larson took a walk with Yousef al Ottawa, the United Arab Emirates\u00a0ambassador\u00a0to the US and a close friend of Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Larson \u2014 who was\u00a0accused of making sexist and racist remarks at work, showing some colleagues nude photos and bullying others\u00a0in a May\u00a0New York Times expose\u00a0\u2014 refused to answer questions when approached by a Post reporter.<\/p>\n

Larson\u2019s boss Bill Gates \u2014 who is facing\u00a0scrutiny for alleged workplace misconduct\u00a0amid a\u00a0messy divorce from his wife Melinda\u00a0\u2014 is scheduled to address the conference later this week to talk about climate change, a source said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Another power pair spotted taking an after lunch stroll was NBCUniversal Jeff Shell and film producer powerhouse Brian Grazer.\u00a0\n <\/p><\/div>\n
