“#Producers reveal stories behind Michael Jackson hits and more<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

If it weren\u2019t for a certain \u201cMiss Jackson if you\u2019re nasty,\u201d \u00fcber producers James \u201cJimmy Jam\u201d Harris and Terry Lewis might have released their first album way back in the \u201980s.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe process started 35 years ago,\u201d Harris, 62, told The Post about their long-awaited debut, \u201cJam & Lewis Vol. 1,\u201d which drops Friday. \u201cAnd then the opportunity to do the \u2018Control\u2019 album with Janet [Jackson] came up. And at the end of doing \u2018Control,\u2019 John McClain \u2014 who was the A&R person on the record \u2014 came up to listen to what we had done, and he goes, \u2018I just need one more [song]!\u2019 So Terry pops a cassette in and says, \u2018John, this is some stuff for our album.\u2019 And about the third song in, John goes, \u2018Wait! That\u2019s the one I need for Janet.\u2019 That song became \u2018What Have You Done for Me Lately.\u2019 So it started her career and basically ended our album \u2014 or at least postponed it for 35 years.\u201d<\/p>\n

After Jackson\u2019s \u201cControl,\u201d Jam & Lewis began taking charge behind the boards for everyone from Mary J. Blige and Mariah Carey to Boyz II Men and Usher \u2014 all of whom show up for the Grammy-winning producers on their new album.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese are our friends, who we happ<\/a>en to work with,\u201d said Lewis, 64. \u201cSpending time with them was so precious, especially \u2026 doing the finishing [touches] during the pandemic. We were always still connected to the artists.\u201d<\/p>\n

As they release new music \u2014 including \u201cBabylove\u201d with their former bandmates in the Time \u2014 Jam & Lewis look back on some of their biggest hits.<\/p>\n

Janet Jackson, \u201cNasty\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cBefore we went into the studio to record with her in Minneapolis \u2026 we were at a club, and some guys came up to Janet and kinda started talking to her in kind of a nasty way,\u201d said Harris. \u201cAnd we were watching it happen, but we weren\u2019t intervening at that point \u2026 And so finally Janet comes over to us, and she goes, \u2018Did you see those guys over there? They were so nasty. Why didn\u2019t you come help me?\u2019 And we were like, \u2018Welp, you must be OK, [because] you\u2019re over here talking to us.\u2019 But it was those kinds of moments \u2026 where if you\u2019ve always lived a life where you\u2019ve had bodyguards or you\u2019ve had people getting you out of things, you never realized that you could get out of them yourself. And so much of the \u2018Control\u2019 album was about that \u2014 a young woman finding herself \u2014 and those experiences all went into the record.\u201d<\/p>\n

Michael Jackson & Janet Jackson, \u201cScream\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jam & Lewis worked with another iconic Jackson \u2014 Michael \u2014 for the first time when the superstar siblings teamed up for their one and only duet in 1995. \u201cThat studio experience was the most mind-blowing of all the studio experiences we\u2019ve ever had,\u201d said Harris of the King of Pop recording his vocal at the Hit Factory in New York. \u201cMichael walked in very quiet, very calm. And then as soon as [the track] came on, he starts dancing around and like goes into a performance. And we were like little girls \u2014 we lost our minds. So Janet was sitting behind us as this was all going down. She\u2019s supposed to do her vocal right after Michael. And Janet leans in to us and whispers in our ears, \u2018I\u2019ll do my vocal in Minneapolis.\u2019 She wanted no part of it anymore.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mary J. Blige, \u201cNo More Drama\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jam & Lewis had worked with Blige on songs such as \u201cEverything\u201d and \u201cLove Is All We Need\u201d before producing the 2001 anthem that would release her from the pain she had been enduring in her life \u2014 and in her music. \u201cAs we worked with Mary over the years, we became friends, and we would watch her in her life\u201d said Lewis. \u201cAnd the concept of that song was so appropriate for her. So when we played it for her, her [reaction] was, \u2018Have you guys been sending a private detective to watch me?\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

And it was Jimmy Jam who had the stroke of genius to sample the piano part from \u201cNadia\u2019s Theme,\u201d<\/a> which is best known as the theme of \u201cThe Young and the Restless.\u201d \u201cThat was me,\u201d said Harris, \u201cbecause I\u2019m a soap-opera watcher.\u201d<\/p>\n

Inspired by the \u201cCool Summer\u201d mixes of \u201cNasty\u201d and \u201cDiamonds\u201d (by Herb Alpert featuring Janet Jackson) that Jam & Lewis had done, Michael sought out the duo to work that same beat-making magic on \u201cMonkey,\u201d a No. 1 hit<\/a> off of his 1987 blockbuster \u201cFaith.\u201d \u201cSo we [meet in] LA, we go to the studio, we start working on the track and he sings it a couple times,\u201d said Harris. \u201cHe was always in and out \u2014\u00a0like a half-hour, maybe an hour. But it gave us everything that we needed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, they had another session with Michael booked for the next day. \u201cAnd he didn\u2019t show up,\u201d said Harris. \u201cBut there was a friend of Terry\u2019s who was coming to check him out, and she brought her friend, who is now my wife [of 27 years, Lisa Padilla]. So we met over the George Michael sessions.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
