Let\u2019s put it this way: if vaunted filmmakers such as Alejandro Jodorowsky (whose planned project ultimately fell through, though that doesn\u2019t mean he has any shortage of <em>Dune<\/em> opinions) and David Lynch (whose idiosyncratic 1984 film of the same name, love it or hate it, is set for a 4K release) found the appeal in adapting <strong>Frank Herbert\u2019s<\/strong> touchstone novel, we should be on pins and needles to see what auteur and Film <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a> favorite\u00a0<strong>Denis Villeneuve<\/strong> has up his sleeve for his two-part blockbuster. Now, courtesy of an interview with \/Film\u2019s very own Jack Giroux, we have some more insights straight from cast member (and apparent <em>Dune<\/em> super-fan)\u00a0<strong>David\u00a0Dastmalchian<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-613666 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/Dune-Images-9-700x435.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/Dune-Images-9-700x435.jpg 700w, https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/Dune-Images-9-360x224.jpg 360w, https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/Dune-Images-9-768x477.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Dancing_Around_Dune\"><\/span>Dancing Around Dune<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post -->It\u2019s pretty apparent that Dastmalchian is admirably bobbing and weaving his way around disclosing any spoilers whatsoever while still providing plenty to reflect on. So, like many of us,\u00a0the actor wastes no time at all heaping praise on Villeneuve before also signaling his familiarity with the source material:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c\u2026I also went and filmed Dune under the magnificent guidance of the visionary, who is Denis Villeneuve. I got the opportunity to bring to life a character who I love from the Frank Herbert novel \u2018Dune,\u2019 which is by far one of the greatest sci-fi novels ever written, in my opinion.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Dastmalchian goes on to describe his takeaways from the script, how it stacks up against the novel, gushing that \u201cthe script is so true to the spirit of the novel.\u201d He adds,\u201dthere is an elevated sense of purpose and tone. It\u2019s such grand <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a> fiction storytelling, and it\u2019s so mind-blowing visually. But then when you get down to the characters and the way they speak, you just have to approach it the way that you do with any character. And for me, finding that was very, very challenging. Because Piter [de Vries] is not like any human I\u2019ve ever encountered before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-681716\" src=\"https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/piter-de-vries-e1625757933464-700x299.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/piter-de-vries-e1625757933464-700x300.jpeg 700w, https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/piter-de-vries-e1625757933464-360x154.jpeg 360w, https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/piter-de-vries-e1625757933464-768x328.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/piter-de-vries-e1625757933464.jpeg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Playing_a_Psychopath\"><\/span>Playing a Psychopath<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In <em>Dune<\/em>,\u00a0Dastmalchian plays the part of the\u00a0twisted Mentat\u00a0Piter de Vries, who is in service to the evil Baron Harkonnen (<strong>Stellan Skarsg\u00e5rd<\/strong>). A Mentat, in the\u00a0<em>Dune<\/em> universe, is\u00a0a person who is highly skilled in logic, computing, and cognitive thinking and trained to be a human computer, of sorts. But Piter de Vries, who was played by Brad Dourif in Lynch\u2019s 1984\u00a0<em>Dune<\/em>, is a \u201ctwisted\u201d Mentat, one lacking morals and willing to use his intelligence to manipulate others. But for Dastmalchian, the part didn\u2019t require much interpretation beyond the script:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post_2 -->\u201cSo the character, Piter de Vries, was always utterly fascinating and disturbing and a dark place to go. I took a great deal of inspiration from the book. But then when I read the script, I was like, \u2018Oh, he\u2019s right there.\u2019 And obviously being in the hands of someone like Denis, it was kind of a no brainer, just what he wanted him to look and move and feel like. Denis is very good at communicating those things.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Dastmalchian definitely hints at it but if you want to get a feel for exactly what kind of performance to expect, well, you can probably just look at\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm2810287\/?ref_=tt_cl_t_10\">Dastmalchian\u2019s past credits<\/a>. De Vries is certainly in keeping with that, charmingly described as \u201can ambitious and impatient sadist whose evil rivaled that of the Baron.\u201d The monstrous Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, for context, is played by Stellan Skarsg\u00e5rd\u00a0in the upcoming adaptation, whom book-readers know for his cruel and utterly ruthless leadership.<\/p>\n<p>For his part,\u00a0Dastmalchian seems well-aware of the kind of character he naturally gravitates towards and insists that there\u2019s a method to the madness.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI guarantee you, any other character I\u2019ve ever played, there are things about them, that they may be extreme, they may look wacky or have some kind of crazy power, but there\u2019s always something I can latch onto and connect to a human being that I\u2019ve either known for a part of my own personality that I\u2019m familiar with, obviously, because it\u2019s me.<\/p>\n<p>With Piter, there\u2019s that psychopathy that comes from being a twisted Mentat, that is frightening and disturbing. And to put myself in his mindset was hard. So to utter a language, because Piter\u2019s brain operates at such a high level, he is for all intents and purposes, a human computer, speaking in the highly specific way in which the language would come out was actually \u2026 It made perfect sense. It seemed to really add a great deal to the character. It felt more like an assist than an obstacle, if that makes sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post_3 --><\/p>\n<p>This all sounds absolutely fascinating and points toward the impressive attention to detail that Villeneuve is bringing to the proceedings. After several delays, <em>Dune<\/em> is now scheduled to hit theaters on\u00a0<strong>October 1, 2021<\/strong>.
