CNN commentator Scott Jennings tore into the\u00a0New York Times<\/a>\u2018 analysis of the American flag that suggested Old Glory had become\u00a0a symbol of divisiveness<\/a>, calling the argument \u201cderanged.\u201d<\/p>\n

Over the holiday weekend, the Times tweeted, \u201cToday, flying the American flag from the back of a pickup truck or over a lawn is increasingly seen as a clue, albeit an imperfect one, to a person\u2019s political affiliation in a deeply divided nation,\u201d with a link to their piece, \u201cA Fourth of July Symbol of Unity That May No Longer Unite.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHow deranged, how crazy have we gotten over our national politics that, if you see someone flying an American flag, you run the other direction, because you assume that you all don\u2019t agree on politics?\u201d Jennings asked on CNN\u2019s \u201cNew Day\u201d on Wednesday. \u201cIt\u2019s crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI really hate this viewpoint,\u201d added Jennings, who previously served as a senior official in the George W. Bush administration. But it wasn\u2019t a viewpoint that surprised the commentator, chalking it up to just another example of the media<\/a>-loving to oppose former\u00a0President Donald Trump<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cTrump said he loved the flag, so now they say they\u2019ve got to be against it. It\u2019s nutty, it\u2019s reflexive partisanship, and it\u2019s awful, and it ought to stop,\u201d Jennings warned.<\/p>\n

He was one of several people to\u00a0blast<\/a>\u00a0the Times\u2019 Fourth of July coverage.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is insane,\u201d said Alex Plitsas, a contributor at The Federalist.<\/p>\n

\u201cOr maybe it\u2019s just a clue that we actually love our country. There\u2019s that,\u201d Ned Ryun said of flag fliers.<\/p>\n

Jennings listed some of \u201cthe flags that matter,\u201d those being \u201cthe ones that our soldiers wear on their uniforms, the one on the moon, the ones that we revere as schoolchildren and say a Pledge of Allegiance to. We\u2019re not saying a pledge to any political party. We are taking a pledge to our country and that\u2019s how we ought to view the flag.\u201d<\/p>\n

News<\/a>busters\u2019 Tim Graham predicted that, after such candid remarks, Jennings\u2019 tenure at CNN may soon be nearing an end.<\/p>\n

The Times\u2019 panned report on the stars and strip<\/a>es comes a few weeks after one of their editorial board members, Mara Gay, stirred controversy for saying she was \u201cdisturbed<\/a>\u201d to see so many American flags during a recent trip to Long Island.\u00a0\n <\/div>\n
