Trump vet: Behind Ben Rhodes\u2019 Rage<\/strong><\/p>\n

For evidence of \u201cthe left\u2019s propensity to vilify\u201d the right, you \u201ccould hardly do better\u201d than Obama aide Ben Rhodes\u2019 new book, \u201cAfter the Fall,\u201d snarks Trump official Peter Berkowitz at The Washington Free Beacon<\/a>. The work proves Rhodes is \u201can imperious partisan ideologue\u201d uninterested in the views of \u201ca substantial portion of his fellow citizens,\u201d as he preposterously rejects \u201cthe possibility that progressive overreach\u201d contributed to President Donald Trump\u2019s election and blames \u201cracism\u201d for opposition to President Barack Obama\u2019s policies. Rhodes seems to count on readers who \u201cknow nothing.\u201d And his rage only corroborates the view that progressive elites \u201cfoment acrimony\u201d and \u201csow disorder.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the left: Blame the Culture War on Liberals<\/strong><\/p>\n

Liberals, not conservatives, are responsible for the culture wars, ar<\/a>g<\/a>ues Kevin Drum at Jabberwocking<\/a>. \u201cDemocrats have stoked the culture wars by getting more extreme on social<\/a> issues, and Republicans have used this to successfully cleave away a segment of both the non-college white vote and, more recently, the non-college nonwhite vote.\u201d GOPers have moved slightly right on social issues these past two decades, but \u201cthe Democratic Party has been pulled far enough left that even lots of non-crazy people find us just plain scary.\u201d Conservatives can app<\/a>ear like the \u201cculture-warmongers\u201d because \u201c\u200a\u2018losing\u2019 the customs and hierarchies that they\u2019ve long lived with\u201d leads to \u201cmore outrageous behavior from conservatives, even though liberals are actually the ur-source of polarization.\u201d<\/p>\n

Conservative: Cancel Culture Killed Comedy<\/strong><\/p>\n

Banning offensive comedy increasingly makes us \u201ca society unable to take a joke \u2014 or even tell one,\u201d laments The Federalist\u2019s Christopher Bedford<\/a>. \u201cReal humor requires risk-taking \u2014 it requires saying something that will surprise and, sometimes, appall the listener.\u201d Yet too often now, \u201ctelling the wrong joke \u2014 or even simply laughing at one \u2014 is a quick way to destroy your life.\u201d Humor that made fun of everyone\u2019s weaknesses and pride unified the audience; today\u2019s is \u201ca world where joy and laughter are sinister and suspicious acts, where every private word could be the fodder for a cancellation frenzy.\u201d Since \u201cwe can\u2019t speak a lot of troublesome truths without a joke attached, unless we want to make a lot of enemies,\u201d it\u2019s no surprise that \u201cthe same people who are trying to divide us by race and sex don\u2019t want us to bond over a good joke any longer.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the right: Hannah-Jones\u2019 Latest Con<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cCongratulations to Nikole Hannah-Jones for parlaying the intellectual imposture of the 1619 Project into a job for life,\u201d snarks Spectator World\u2019s Dominic Green<\/a>. Howard University hired her \u201cas a professor in race and journalism\u201d \u2014 fields \u201crife with dubious standards and historic embarrassments, so she should fit right in.\u201d Some \u201cobject to allowing a mountebank like Hannah-Jones onto the verdant lawns\u201d of the academy, citing \u201cacademic standards, as if they still exist.\u201d But now the \u201cliberal arts are neither liberal nor artistic\u201d; they\u2019re \u201cilliberal and imaginatively barren.\u201d Indeed, the \u201cacademy promotes mediocrity and false history, and trades in credentials when it should be teaching the spirit of enquiry.\u201d Perhaps it\u2019s \u201cheartening that, after the horrors of slavery and the disgraces of Jim Crow, historically black parents get to buy into the same hustle as historically white parents.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gadfly: Gotham\u2019s Reality Check for Lefties<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe notion of a centrist, tough-on-crime mayor replacing\u201d Mayor de Blasio \u201csounds good,\u201d cheers National Review\u2019s Jim Geraghty<\/a> in response to Eric Adams\u2019 win in the city\u2019s Democratic primary. Of course, \u201cit remains to be seen whether Adams\u201d has the Rudy Giuliani-level courage \u201cto exchange short-term unpopularity for long-term improvement in the city\u2019s streets.\u201d Yet Adams\u2019 victory signals that rank-and-file Dems are reckoning with the grim results of anti-police ideological hysteria. \u201cThe Democratic Party\u2019s conventional wisdom on \u2018defunding the police\u2019 has switched so intensely, so quickly, that Biden advisers are implausibly claiming Republicans are the ones trying to \u2018defund the police\u2019 because they voted against a past Democratic spending bill.\u201d <\/p>\n
