Even if you think you don\u2019t know the superhero landing, you know the superhero landing.<\/p>\n

The pose has become as ubiquitous as spandex in superhero movies<\/a>. How it works is a character drops from a height and slams into the ground in a crouch with feet spread apart, knees bent \u2014 or on one knee, always with a fist pounding the earth.<\/p>\n

The move, also called a three-point landing, has become so well-worn that it\u2019s parodied in the new \u201cBlack Widow\u201d film<\/a>, out Friday.<\/p>\n

Fellow spy Yelena Belova, played by Florence Pugh<\/a>, makes fun of the Widow\u2019s dramatic landings (as Scarlett Johansson<\/a> did memorably in 2010\u2019s \u201cIron Man 2\u201d and other Marvel films).<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy do you always do that thing?\u201d Pugh snarks to Johansson. \u201cIt\u2019s like a fighting pose. You\u2019re a total poser.\u201d<\/p>\n

But where did the superhero landing come from? It\u2019s difficult to pinpoint an exact origin, but the pose likely came from Japanese films, television and anime<\/a>, where it is known as san-ten chakuchi.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a whole genre of Japanese TV called tokusatsu [action- and special effects-heavy series], and it\u2019s very standard in tokusatsu for heroes to strike dramatic poses,\u201d said Lynzee Loveridge, executive editor at Anime News<\/a> Network. Shows such as the 1960s \u201cUltraman\u201d and the 1970s \u201cSuper Sentai\u201d (later re-cut for action sequences in the US\u2019 1990s-era \u201cPower Rangers\u201d show) used them as a genius sales gimmick. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cYou throw a pose and you hold it for a second, so it can be taken up in merchandise and then repeated by kids at the playground,\u201d said Rayna Denison, head of media<\/a> at the University of East Anglia.<\/p>\n

Dramatic poses are also standard in martial arts films, with two combatants often pausing their fight to posture for a second or two before re-engaging.<\/p>\n

But the process of creating a dramatic visual exclamation mark can be traced back even further \u2014 to 17th-century kabuki theater.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a tradition called mie when actors wearing ornate, cumbersome costumes will strike a pose to accentuate a dramatic moment,\u201d Loveridge said. \u201cThere\u2019s a mie pose that\u2019s somewhat similar to the superhero pose.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s possible the superhero landing \u2014 or something like it \u2014 started in kabuki then migrated into Japan\u2019s manga, cinema, anime and TV in the 20th century and was then borrowed by American comic book artists in the \u201960s and \u201970s.<\/p>\n

A martial arts craze swept the American comics industry in the early 1970s, and many of the medium\u2019s artists and writers were influenced by Japanese culture.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt Marvel in particular, you have an emphasis on dramatic poses,\u201d Denison said. \u201cThey published a [1978] book, \u2018How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way,\u2019 that was all about spectacularizing the imagery, making them more exciting. That\u2019s a big resource for the people adapting Marvel movies.\u201d<\/p>\n

One of the earlier examples of the superhero landing can be found in \u201cDaicon IV,\u201d an animated short made for a 1983 convention. It shows a character dressed as a Playboy bunny executing the pose after dispatching enemies.<\/p>\n

The winking amateur film served as almost a parody of anime culture, meaning the superhero landing was likely already widespread enough back then to deserve poking fun.<\/p>\n

Since then, the three-point landing has shown up in countless films, TV shows and video game<\/a>s, including 1998\u2019s \u201cBlade,\u201d the \u201cMatrix\u201d films, 2004\u2019s \u201cCatwoman,\u201d 2005\u2019s \u201cElektra,\u201d 2011\u2019s \u201cSucker Punch\u201d \u2014 even in the 2000 video for NSYNC\u2019s <\/a>\u201cBye Bye Bye.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s also cameoed in nearly every modern superhero movie, starting with 2008\u2019s \u201cIron Man.\u201d Director Jon Favreau tells The Post he was inspired by a 2004 \u201cIron Man\u201d cover by artist Adi Granov depicting the classic pose.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHis artwork provided a lot of inspiration for the film, and he helped us design the character\u2019s look for the movie,\u201d Favreau said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

(Granov has\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0he borrowed the pose from \u201cJapanese mech.\u201d)<\/p>\n

Nowadays, the pose has become universally understood visual vocabulary.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s something to be said about the way in which the pose signifies a particular kind of physicality, almost like a visual shorthand and that\u2019s translated into the films,\u201d said Miriam Kent, a lecturer in film studies at the University of Essex.<\/p>\n

In fact, it even extends beyond the screen.<\/p>\n

In 2019, a giant statue was unveiled <\/a>in Plymouth, England, meant to depict an anonymous, powerful and fearless female actor. You\u2019ll never guess the pose the artist chose.\n <\/div>\n
