Wealthy Florida parents who pledged $1.35 million to their daughters\u2019 exclusive Catholic school are suing for breach of contract \u2014 accusing it of abandoning a Catholic education in favor of going \u201cwoke\u201d and forcing kids to \u201ccheck their white privilege.\u201d<\/p>\n

Anthony and Barbara Scarpo noted how the Academy of the Holy Names in Tampa even named its auditorium \u201cScarpo Family Theatre\u201d<\/a> after their huge pledge in 2017, saying they were helping it raise $9 million in total.<\/p>\n

But now the parents want their money back \u2014 including tuition paid for their two daughters \u2014 in outrage at how the school turned its back on Catholicism to go \u201cwoke,\u201d their 13-count, 45-page lawsuit claims.<\/p>\n

The Scarpos claim they were betrayed by the school suddenly \u201cembracing the new, politically correct, divisive and \u2018woke\u2019 culture where gender identity, human sexuality, and pregnancy termination among other \u2018hot-button issues,\u2019 took center stage,\u201d the lawsuit said.<\/p>\n

The school \u201cinsidiously indoctrinated its students, requiring that they \u2018check their white privilege\u2019 and feel sufficiently guilty merely because of their skin color,\u201d the lawsuit said.<\/p>\n

Pupils were also made to feel guilty that \u201ctheir parents could afford their attendance at the Academy,\u201d where tuition is up to $22,450 a year for high school students, the lawsuit said.<\/p>\n

Instead of the focus on teaching, Catholicism was \u201cbilled as an unfortunate past deserving of its students\u2019 guilt for not having been \u2018woke\u2019 sooner,\u201d the documents allege.<\/p>\n

The lawsuit claims this amounts to fraud and breach of contract.<\/p>\n

As a result, the couple is seeking to rescind the $1.35 million pledge, and get back the $240,000 cash gift they had already paid.<\/p>\n

They also want the tuition they paid for their daughters \u2014 which was not detailed \u2014 to be paid to Catholic charities, and for their name to be removed from the auditorium and \u201cany public displays or media.\u201d<\/p>\n

The parents \u2014 who import diamonds and jewelry and own a trust fund company \u2014 are also seeking to bar the school from claiming it offers a Catholic education.<\/p>\n

The school has denied the claims \u2014 with a lawyer writing to the Scarpos\u2019 legal team to call the lawsuit a publicity stunt, the Tampa Bay Times said<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can discern no motivation behind the lawsuit other than attention-seeking by your clients, and a desire by you to build a brand,\u201d lawyer Gregory Hearing wrote, threatening a countersuit to get the full pledge.<\/p>\n

Emily Wise, a school spokeswoman, told the Florida paper in an email that the claims are \u201cfalse and unsubstantiated.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will continue to pray for all parties involved, and, if necessary, we are prepared to defend ourselves in court,\u201d Wise said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
