Comedian JB Smoove calls himself \u201cThe Black Dolphin\u201d \u2014 so he was ready to dive alongside musician Brad Paisley for their new special.<\/p>\n

\u201cI embody that title,\u201d Smoove told The Post. \u201cDolphins are fearless, love people and all animals\u2026and the Black Dolphin gets along with everybody. So I felt very much at home. I\u2019m a man of adventure.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maybe, but that tends to change when coming face-to-face with sharks, as they did in \u201cBrad Paisley\u2019s Shark Country,\u201d premiering Tuesday (July 13) at 9 p.m. on as part of Discovery\u2019s 33rd annual \u201cShark Week\u201d programming slate.<\/p>\n

In the special, filmed in the Bahamas, Smoove and Paisley are joined by marine scientist Dr. Austin Gallagher as they don their wetsuits for an underwater journey to see how sound can attract and\/or repel sharks. (And, yes, Paisley strums his acoustic guitar below the surface while Smoove bangs a cowbell, among other tests).<\/p>\n

Smoove, known to TV fans as Leon on \u201cCurb Your Enthusiasm,\u201d said he trained for his underwater adventure in his backyard pool.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey told me I had to get scuba-certified,\u201d he said. \u201cYou get scared because they\u2019re teaching you underwater survival skills and it\u2019s not all fun and game<\/a>s. They have to teach you safety precautions in case you or your diving partner get into trouble\u2026you learn how to take the [oxygen] regulator out of your mouth and throw it to the side and you gotta know your hand signals or how to let your diving partner know if you\u2019re out of air.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a little computer attached to your tank that lets you know how much air you\u2019ve got left and that part scares the hell out of you. I\u2019m sitting there like, \u2018Am I gonna remember all this stuff if something goes wrong?’\u201d<\/p>\n

That emphasizes how important it is to be in sync with your diving partner in an anything-can-happ<\/a>en scenario. Smoove said he and Paisley, who had never met in any substantial way, got along famously and trusted each other intrinsically.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome people you don\u2019t meet by chance or at an event. Some people you meet when the universe throws you together and you find out you should\u2019ve met a long time ago,\u201d he said of Paisley. \u201cOr maybe you already met in a former life. That\u2019s how I felt about Brad. Maybe in another life I was a damn guitar or a banjo, I don\u2019t know!<\/p>\n

\u201cI felt like I\u2019d known [him] forever and he said the same thing to me. It was something that was supposed to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Smoove and Paisley survived their \u201cShark Week\u201d special intact, there were a few hairy situations \u2014 including being surrounded by a school of sharks.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know some people would panic when that happens and [would] literally lose their minds,\u201d Smoove said. \u201cThey would forget to breathe and forget everything they learned. But oh, man, when those sharks were around us? It felt like a bunch of puppies\u2026and we realized they really didn\u2019t care about [harming] us. I don\u2019t know if it was that they didn\u2019t know what we were, or we were just another piece of the ocean to them\u2026like a shipwreck or a reef. Sure, they were curious, but enough to do something to us?<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t feel that at all.\u201d<\/p>\n

Smoove, who was scuba-certified along with his wife \u2014 \u201cYou can\u2019t go on vacation and say, \u2018Baby, I\u2019m going diving, see you later!\u201d \u2014 said his first diving experience won\u2019t be his last.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s definitely something I would like to do again,\u201d he said. \u201cI can\u2019t say I would go shark-diving, specifically, but I will say this much: it\u2019s just beautiful when the water is so crystal-clear and you can see the sun shining through the water and the boat above you. <\/p>\n

\u201cYou look up and go, \u2018Wow, man.’\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
