This dangerous practice makes reality TV stranger than fiction.\u00a0<\/p>\n

While many fans take reality TV with a grain of salt, few realize just how heavily edited some of the material is, industry insiders say. Now, production staff and stars alike are coming forward to address the harmful effects of \u201cFrankenbiting\u201d audio clips to make cast members seem far more horrible than they really are.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m fine with people making drama out of anything heightened that you\u2019d do in your real life,\u201d MTV\u2019s \u201cThe Hills\u201d star Spencer Pratt told Vanity Fair<\/a> in a new expos\u00e9 about the dirty trick. \u201cThat\u2019s the kind of fake reality I\u2019m cool with \u2026 But the worst of it isn\u2019t what they showed me doing, but what they showed me saying. It\u2019s the sort of editing I am not down with and feel is totally whack if you\u2019re calling it reality.\u201d<\/p>\n

In one particularly harmful example of Frankenbiting, Pratt recalls an audio clip of him saying, \u201cLet\u2019s hit that back door.\u201d He said it was in reference to taking the VIP entrance to a club, but claims it was edited to sound like he was going to \u201chit\u201d his then-girlfriend, now wife, Heidi Montag, from the \u201cback door.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s like, I don\u2019t talk like that,\u201d he told the publication.<\/p>\n

Industry insiders claimed to the outlet that network higher-ups do pressure show producers to edit audio to enhance drama \u2014 truth be damned.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cNo one ever says, \u2018We need a villain,\u2019 \u201d an anonymous producer, whose credits include a popular dating show, said of how the editing instructions are communicated. \u201cIt\u2019s more mobster in the sense of like \u2014 you know how in movies<\/a> when they\u2019re sitting at the table and they\u2019re like, \u2018You know what needs to be done\u2019? It\u2019s like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

As more people come forward against the practice, though, there\u2019s hope that it may soon become less acceptable.\u00a0<\/p>\n

After producer Toni-Ann Lagana penned a January article for the Hollywood Reporter<\/a> about how underpaid producers are made to do extreme edits on audio clips for shows, she was met significantly with praise.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI was so pleasantly surprised by the overwhelming response from co-workers and past bosses reaching out to congratulate and thank me for speaking up,\u201d she told Vanity Fair of the reaction to her piece.\u00a0\n <\/p><\/div>\n
